I have an opportunity to acquire 39 unopened 1961 proof sets. Should I take the plunge?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,606 ✭✭✭✭✭
The recent thread about an E-Bay purchase of a 50 year old mint box with 75 unopened 1961 proof sets was a fun thread to follow, however the 75 sets apparently contained no varieties or cameos.

Today the 39 unopened sets popped up on my radar screen and I am wondering if some cherries lurk within.

Your thoughts.

Only if you have video capabilities. LOL

    IMHO depends on the pricing.

Or better yet, how about the price listed on the PCGS Price Guide ($16.00 as of today)image

Shoot, man! I can find you a whole lot more than that. Last time I asked the prices, they were about $10 each. Various dates as well, all the 1961 type flat pack. Hmmm, maybe I should call.

OK, called. Melt is $27 and that's the price for opened ones. Unopened is $30. My, how silver has jumped.

    "Good luck and have fun.

It would not surprise me to learn that the sets are brilliant only. However given the price of silver, you got a bargain. You could easily flip the sealed box for a big profit."

Now, does that comment sound familiar??? image

Seriously, why not take the plunge? Given the price of silver....oh wait, that's already been said...image

    I'll come up with something.

let me ask just an honest question here, not trying to be a schmuck

only thing that bothers me about the unopened statement is unless its in a sealed mint box
taped up and whatnot, with all the fake envelopes out there available-do you really think they
    are unopened, seriously.

I only ask cause I have always wonderd and would not buy myself cause of that fact.

however you rock and I wish ya the best on whatever ya do

and thanks for being so cool for all ya do with the langboard situation

if I had unopened sets Id give em to ya just for all ya do, seriously image

I was able to look at the sets today. Lots of different factors I observed when looking at the sets lead me to believe that there is a very good chance that they are truly unopened.

I have not decided whether to acquire them yet, particularly since the owner of the sets has not decided the asking price on the sets. However, if the asking price is not too much above melt, I will probably roll the dice.

A few years back I bought about a dozen unopened 1961 sets and lucked out. Just over half the sets had moderately cameo halves and had cameo nickels. I quicky resold the other ones. Maybe lightening will strike twice.

A few years ago, I bought 50(1961 unopened proof set) out of a box of 100 (I know where the other 50 are) and, I'M going to leave the other 50 alone.

    Had fun though.

I would suggest contacting the buyer of schatzkys (sp?) Prrof box, turning a quick profit and moving on. But then again I don't blame him field opening it. My gut either says pass or flip.

I'd say 1 out of every 37500 sets there has been a PR68DC.
Imagine spending over a million dollars to find that one coin.

My mother in law has bought 10 sets a year since 1951, they have never seen the light of day except for a few 1961's that i opened. I know 3 or 4 other people that have bought from 2 to 50 sets a years for many years and never opened them. IMO as long as they are not listed on Ebay, i am sure there are plenty around. Just about every saturday that i stop by the local B@M there always seems to be someone in there with a large cardboard box trying to sell many years worth of mint and proof sets. Most appear to never be opened, esp the early 70's.

Wouldn't pay a penny beyond melt and face value of the non PM coins. Majority of these, " unopened box/proof sets have been played with. I know how to open and reseal a Mint box without a trace. I have never done it or will I.

  • Well I only buy unopened mint boxes. Like other have said there is way to many fake envelopes out there.

but if you do buy them post the results and good luck!! image
