Lime Green Inserts (Pictures added with Ike $)

Does anyone have any information on the Lime Green Inserts around the coin on PCGS slabs? I just bought an 1974 Silver Ike which has an Green Insert and Label. I searched "Green Insert" and got one thread which had three posts. I think they were used on Registry Set coins.
Any more Information?

Check this link and you'll have any and every question about slab generations (PCGS slabs) answered, thanks to Conder101's extremely hard work.

edited...it does NOT explain the ring color change, I apologize....but any other info is there. There was just another thread with that topic...I'll find it.
    I'll come up with something.

I think someone said that some of the inserts just turned yellow/green over time.
  • Nice purchase. I saw that one too about an hour ago and it sure made me stop and think twice about purchasing.

    << <i>Answer >>

While I don't think an answer was specified in any of the attached threads, I do know that some of them just turn green for whatever reason.

I think I left one sitting out in the Sun for a couple of days with no real adverse effects so if it's caused from UV damage, it had to be a LOT of UV exposure to create that effect.

And BTW, not all of them turn such a deep lime green. (FULL SCREEN)

The 76-S is a little off near the top and the 77 just barely shows any color at all but it's there. I could assume that since the Silver coins have a deeper green that maybe the silver has something to do with it but I think Braddick posted a 73-D IKE which was a deep lime green last August. The thread has coins graded as late as 2005 with green colored inserts.

I don't buy into the UV theory either, as UV in general does not pass thru plastics very well.

I would expect the plastic of the slab to filter out 95%+ of UV. (Just as automobile windows do. So when your optometrist tells you that you would be wise to get your new specs specially coated to filter out UV [$$] because you drive a great deal, you can tell him he is full of BS!)

  • Sorry, the one you purchased was not what I had been looking at. On the BST page in the March Bargain Bin thread there is another Ike for sale that is very lime green. Pretty cool color.

I find it interesting that all so far are the dollar size gasket. Wonder if there was a batch of them made with some impurity in the mix?

Ahhhh....I think the answer is the plastic ring is MISSING the UV protectors usually incorporated in the compound to prevent yellowing or turning light shades of green over a period of time.
