picked up 10 rolls of pennies from the bank today

Out of 500 coins, there was just a single wheat cent (1950, in good condition). The rolls had between 8 and 20 copper pennies each - average probably 12 or 13 per roll. Of the coppers, just one dated 1959, and a handful from the 60s. Most were 1970s and there were a lot of coppers dated 1982. Found a couple of really nice red mostly BU cents from the 70s.

Also found three Canadian pennies dated 1983, 1984, and 1994.

This was in downtown Chicago. I asked whether they had any half dollars, but the answer was "no."

  • Yea I did a $25 box search a few weeks ago which yielded about 15 wheats and a few candian cents. Only about 20% of the box was copper (just basing that off of the looks of the copper zip-lock bag vs the zincoln bag that is goin back to the bank.

I sifted my paws through $100 worth of cents since Saturday and have turned up about 45 wheats, earliest a '17-D, a couple from 1920, a 1930, some mid 1930's and mostly '40's and '50's though. About 35% of the cents are pre-82s. Also found seven GVI cents from Canada, the earliest a '41. Otherwise on Canada cents I only keep the pre-1965 QEII YH for my collection, the other pre-1996 bronze go into the bronze pile for retirement. I usually get about a hundred of them for the bronze pile. So many I do not even separate them from the USA stuff. I live fairly close to the Canadian border and see quite a few Canadians, the earliest I have gotten in cent box searches is a 1920, but the best is the rare 1925 I got last year.

I've found that many of the zincolns have corroded somewhat. I'm sure the mint has noted this and might consider the composition of future coins. To answer your question, those with corrosion are not copper. I've also found after handling many cents that you can almost feel the difference in weight (this might also be my imagination - telling the difference between 2 & 3 grams).

agreed. drop them on a wood table/desk and you'll tell the difference. copper rings, the zinc is more of a thud.
