picked up 10 rolls of pennies from the bank today

Out of 500 coins, there was just a single wheat cent (1950, in good condition). The rolls had between 8 and 20 copper pennies each - average probably 12 or 13 per roll. Of the coppers, just one dated 1959, and a handful from the 60s. Most were 1970s and there were a lot of coppers dated 1982. Found a couple of really nice red mostly BU cents from the 70s.
Also found three Canadian pennies dated 1983, 1984, and 1994.
This was in downtown Chicago. I asked whether they had any half dollars, but the answer was "no."

<< <i>I need educated. How do you tell the copper from zinc from 1982? >>
I've found that many of the zincolns have corroded somewhat. I'm sure the mint has noted this and might consider the composition of future coins. To answer your question, those with corrosion are not copper. I've also found after handling many cents that you can almost feel the difference in weight (this might also be my imagination - telling the difference between 2 & 3 grams).
<< <i>just drop those 82s on a hard tabletop. the ring will tell you which is which. copper rings, zinc dosent. >>
agreed. drop them on a wood table/desk and you'll tell the difference. copper rings, the zinc is more of a thud.
