He states in the auction it was probably cleaned... $25 for a cleaned 09 VDB? I think I'd probably pass.

Even being cleaned, the color looks off. Are you sure it's not a fake?

I guess we'll find out soon enough!

From the pics I couldn't say if it has nice cartwheel or if it was whizzed or recolored or what.
There's a small obv spot and what looks like some dings on the rev rim.

It might turn out to be worth $25 or not worth much. I'd pass on it, not much upside.

I wouldn't have touched it with a ten-foot pole, the flatness of the cheek and hair do not match up with the luster and red surfaces shown in the picture. I have little doubt the coin was messed with somehow and that you will be disappointed with your purchase.

WIth the odd angled photo, I can't be certain that it's even genuine. Looks like a lot of flatness on the obverse hair on an issue that is normally razor sharp.

I disagree. I think it was whizzed. The luster looks off to me...

Without seeing the coin in-hand, it's tough to make a judgment, but definitely NOT whizzed.

    "whizzing
Term to describe the process of mechanically moving the metal of a lightly circulated coin to simulate luster. Usually accomplished by using a wire brush attachment on a high-speed drill."

Not whizzed....no way...I'm sure most have seen 1909's that have a super satiny finish on them like this one, I took a couple photos today when I received it from an angle similar to the OP's pics and got the same result that he/she did.........

All in all it's got nice color and great satiny lustre but it is kind of baggy looking in the obv. fields...Imo a 63-64 Red...
  • You guys are funny. If that coin was in a PCGS 65 or even 66 holder you would all be going gaga over it. Looks the same as what i just mentioned.

Woops! I was looking at the auction photos, sorry guys! The obverse looks really odd in the seller's photos, which led to me thinking it was whizzed. I agree it's not after seeing Sumorada's pics. My bad! Nice coin!

'09 VDB MPL? No, I don't think so. Now that would be some pick at $20.

I don't see any serious problems from those photos. Looks fine to me.

I wouldn't have bid on that coin based on the sellers pics. But based on the OP's pics, the coin looks great... certainly better than 64.

Looks nice from the pics, and could be another Sumorada-score image
But, only 1 person on the forum has had it in hand and the rest of us are just going by a picture that can show slightly differently (color) on different monitors.

I will withhold any guessing and just say, "If Eric likes it, and since he already has it in-hand, then that's all good and was likely well worth the $20"

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Thats looks like a nice coin to me. Not the strongest strike, but definately a nice pickup for $20. Be interesting to see what PCGS says.
