Something smells fishy here

I recognize a few of these coins and no way is he actually selling them. The 1860 is currently in the set I just sold to a well heeled buyer, the 1878-CC used to be my coin and was sold by Heritage a few years back. It'll be interesting to see what actually arrives in the mail. Unfortunately, I didn't do a completed items search before I hit 'buy it now' - now that I see a coin that I know the current location of in his listings, I'm already warming up the paypal and credit card dispute forms.

report coin & currency specific auctions.

I'm sure they'll take your word for it on at least the one you just sold.

Where do you think they got the photos?

China is not spelled Chula Vista but his shipping indicates otherwise:

Items will be shipped via Airmail.
Transit time is approximately 9-19 business days.

I say it is a compromised account or just a another Chinese thief.

Listing looks fake to me. Most people with those coins, would NOT describe them in a very generic/amateurish way. NOT a coin person, let alone,a numismatist image

1860 Seated Liberty Dollar - No Motto and No Mintmark?

An original 1860- Seated Liberty Dollar with very good eye appeal,
along with surprising color and surface features but has MinMark and No Motto!

Who describes a blazing white gem 1860 Philly seated dollar as "circulated" and then lets it go for $390?

Surprising color? I'd say....especially for a totally white coin.
Has MinMark? Yup, no mint mark guy...it's a Philly coin. image
    Original? Hardly.

At this rate TDN you'll be able to duplicate your entire old REG set for about 1% of the price you originally paid! Now that's a deal.

I was the high bidder on the 1844-o $10. The only coins for sale at the time were the quarter that has not closed and that. I regret not looking at recent sales history. I have already paid. I suppose it is too early to start the dispute process.

"Too early for dispute?".........While back I call Paypal to open a dispute the day after I won a $20 gold piece. Another buyer message me to "watch-out " as seller using same picture for every auction. Seller started to get negs....Paypal opened claim right away. If delivered,no harm done.Seller messaged me to cancel claim. That seller is no longer a registered user.....Best to be safe.

Check his feedback. Not high jacked account. Been selling coins for years. Unfortunately for y'all, they're obviously counterfeits.

He's using stock photos for all of his auctions.

Is it against ebays policy to try to cancel a transaction before the seller ships the item?

I'm curious as to what grade you thought you were buying? I don't know gold very well, and particulalry not that issue, but I would think it was at the least a very nice 55, and probably more, am I right, or not? Didn't you think it went too cheap?? Didn't that set off any alarms?
  • SmittysSmittys Posts: 9,876 ✭✭✭✭✭
Look at all the positive feedback for the same items over and over again, how many 1878-CC do they have image
But the bad part is they've sold a lot.
Not a highjacked account, just weird the way I see it.

I can't see any of the auctions from here but I would call paypal right away and alert them that the sales are suspicious and make sure they are holding the funds. They sometimes get caught in the middle and the scammer ends up scamming paypal. PP should appreciate the tip and treat you right if you save them money. --Jerry

No. Once shipped, can't be cancelled but upon receipt an item significantly not as described (SNAD) claim can be filed by the buyer. I would contact seller before shipment, tell him my position and ask for a refund. Keep in mind anything said on ebay messages will be reviewed if a claim is filed.

Hasn't sold a coin, or anything for that matter, since Oct of '09. Account seems to have been inactive since then, and nothing but women's shoes since his last sale in '09. Either it's hijacked, or Al Bundy inherited a coin collection.
    I'll come up with something.

That's what I think. The acct was dormant 1.5 years. Then a quick 18 feedback in 30 days ($70 total sales), none of it coins.

My guess for a possible scenario. Scammer finds dormant coin selling account, spends 30 days selling cheap items ($70 total sales), then sells a quick $5K in non existent coins, POOF, gone.

Yea, that feedback sure looks suspicious. In 09 the items were coins of decent values then that new feedback in 2011 if you add up all the items (shoes) it's about $60 worth of stuff in total.

obviously something going on if they are using photos of coins they don't own.

I'm just not sure which one. I'm not sure it's a hijacked account. It could be. I'm just surprised that they've sold a lot of shoes to different people.

it could be like those auctions seen more just before Christmas. They list something they don't have and make paypal eat the loss when they don't deliver and they've closed the accounts.

It could be a lot of things. Maybe they have some similar coins and are using better photos of better coins.

The name does turn up in a "people search" for chula vista. And that bit about airmail seems to be for international(non-US) sales.

But TDN recognizes his coins.... something is definitely going on and it ain't good.

Look at some of the shoe auctions, they state Tuscon AZ as the location and other just say US, fishy to say the least.

Reported, still no response from ebay. Feedback indicates bottle of perfume sent instead of a coin on two items.
