In trying to understand these markups...

...I begin by trying to understand the markdowns ($500/25% omg!!!). What does this all say about a dealer's motive and business model? They can certainly do whatever they want, but geez Louise. I guess the way the market is these days, you just can't find someone who chooses to keep it real.

Is that a really weak strike? It looks AU to me?

'Cause it's not very appealing and the seller wants his money out of it.

That obverse definitely doesn't look MS to me.

Without more details than anybody here is probably ever going to have, it doesn't say much of anything.

MS Walkers have been in decline for the last year or so. I have picked up a few MS66's at about 75% of the PCGS price guide during that time just date set commons but still nice coins.

Mintmark is on the reverse. 1917 Walkers have two varieties... mintmark on the obverse and mintmark on the reverse.

    Mint mark is on reverse.

yo, pontiac, b. cool! It's not about if the question has merit, it's simply about a dealer's pricing motive. If you choose to explain pricing actions like this (compared to standard market pricing guides and/or current auction prices realized), I'd sure appreciate it, even better than that, I'd listen!!! image Sure, I might not be asking my question right, but I think you're smart enough to get my meaning, aren't you?

Why do dealers waste my time with these exorbitant markups/markdowns? Does the guy think he's doing me a favor? I see this seller doing similar markdowns ALL THE TIME. Is he out to impress me with his kindness with such steep markdowns, or simply baffle me why he'd ever price something so high to begin with? Point being, I wouldn't want to buy from a guy who I think is inflating his prices that much to begin with.

I've watched a few of his (or her) auctions. He takes pretty good pics, a lot better than most on ebay. I see his prices are in flux fairly often, which to me means he is just trying to find a way to sell his coins at the right price. Some of the prices are pretty high, then are marked down 25%, but he can do whatever he wants with his prices to get his coins moving. JMO.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Seller says if you want to buy it, this item is $1,574.99 (copied directly from the listing). How is that a waste of anybody's time?
  • It is sort of like the clothing store where everything is always on sale. An old and effective sales technique. After all, we all looked at an eBay listing that few of us would otherwise have seen.
  • yeah, they take real good pics, all things considered, for ebay.

As I mentioned in my OP, they certainly can do whatever they want, but I'd get damn tired of having to go back and mark all my stuff down, every friggin' week.

    hey, onward, panchitos.

It WOULD be much more fun to mark everything up.
  • This seller seems to want way more than the going rate for his coins,as most of his material is just common stuff that is easy to get a bead on the pricing,it is a stupid way to do business in my opinion.

Sounds like you'd be better off shopping at a place like this (sorry R.H., yours was an easy pick):

    link to a nice website

Their price seems to take priority over the date and mint mark of their coins..., mrpotatoheadd, you'd fit right in!
