Anacs 1861 Seated Dollar (Details)

Well I have an 1861 type set, No Gold (yet anyway)

Trying to keep the coins AU 58, but when it comes to the Seated Dollar it gets kind of expensive for my modest budget.
So when I ran across this Anacs Details (Scratched coin) I snapped it up.
Problem free holder around $3000 plus
Problem holder about half.

So what is your opinion on the details holders?

Do you have any Anacs detail coins to show?

Please post if you do.

I have a few of them and find nothing at all wrong with them. Congrats on your Seated Dollar pickup!

The scratches are pretty evenly distributed, I don't fine them to distractive.

    I like it! image

It is what it is. Some will stick their noses up, but not bad for us common folk.image
  • If you got it for half of $3,000 you did pretty well. It has decent eye appeal to me.

Your 1861 looks like a good buy as long as you are happy with it. Quite a scarce coin, don't know how long you have been looking. I have been looking for years for the one I want and haven't found it yet.

I paid more than half for my "details" below and I am still happy with it.

A problem coin is always a problem coin. I don't like it - I'd prefer a nice XF instead ... or a gently cleaned coin that didn't have those obtrusive scratches

    I appreciate your opinion.

I kind of bought it impulsively. But I figured with such a popular date it would always be a fairly liquid asset, and i will re-purchase again in the future. I know this is not the most effective way to collect, but we all have to start somewhere.

I would not have purchased that coin. There were better options: drop down a bit in grade, find a genuine 'slider' (AU details) that has a few too many hairlines, or save your money
until you have enough to get what you really want.

ALL classic coins should be viewed as a bit to very illiquid. Problem coins, having serious marks or surface defects, are about as illiquid as coins can get.

On the one hand, I don't find the scratches too distracting, especially considering the monster images (and nice pics btw, I am jealous!).

OTOH, I agree with TDN - this coin has problems and will always have problems. It is too bad someone abused her so badly. And a nice XF could go right along with a set of AUs IMO.

All in all, I don't disagree with your impulse buy. Sometimes, buying coins is like buying stocks. Having a small position (or a filler coin) keeps you in the game and gives you a good basis to decide if you want more - or in this case you will have a basis for knowing when a better piece comes along.

Bowers' book says this date is scarce and elusive in all grades, and estimates 200-300 coins in VF-AU, with ~60 coins in mint state.

Huge pics always make things look worse.

    Here are some smaller pics.

I have a 1862 dollar with a worse problem, my coin is holed and plugged and lower grade. Half the time I regret buying it, half the time, I remind myself that I haven't seen one for sale that fit my budget since I bought many years ago. A good many collectors reject all problem coins. That's a fine decision, but I am not in that camp. Price is an issue, as resale is dodgy. Dealers offer very low on problem coins. Many collectors don't want them at all, and the few that do often want a steep discount.

As with many decisions, there is no right or wrong answer. Every collector decides on what goes into their collection and how much to pay.

Looking at the image, I think I would have passed on a coin with scratches at $1500. The unknown part of that equation is how long I had been looking and what alternatives I was finding, as I haven't been shopping for that coin. So that might be part of the story, how many coins have you seen, how long have you been looking, what had you been finding?

Looked for a few years. There are a few (less than 4 currently that I can find for sale) available. None anywhere near this price. I have had this for about a year. Plus my income would not let me buy this coin in a problem free holder with an acceptable look when I bought this one.

So it's still ok dokie by me.

Even when I get another, I am not sure I will part with this one.

it's a very honest coin, there's a story behind each of those marks

it's hard for me to criticize a coin that I don't have or couldn't easily find a better one

Beautiful coin, Rob, regardless of grade. As previously stated, scratches do not bother me at all. Would be proud to have this coin in my collection.

Personally I am not normally a fan of "details" coins. That being said, I like yours. It has a story to tell and the history of the piece is vibrant. Bottom line imho is if you like it then who cares what any of the rest of us think image Congrats on the pickup.

Very neat coin, circulated during the civil war era, who knows, maybe used in battle to fix a gun, rubbed up against something inside a saddlebag, lots of history to enjoy!---------------------BigE

Those scratches are not too bad... I've seen worse, but I would prefer a coin that had a light clean (wipe). CONGRATS !!!

Excellent coin. Looks to have been carried around by someone (maybe a soldier) in a pocket with keys or other metal, as "hard money" during wartime when silver and gold coins disappeared from circulation.

  • I like it, I'd gladly put that in my collection. I think you did well. Its history and overall appeal make up for more than a few of those "honest" scratches.

I own several coins with problems. Sometimes you have no choice if thats what your budget will allow. I enjoy them just as much as if it was a flawless version.

Although my seated dollar is a slightly lower grade/problem free. I like yours better. Go figure.
