My ongoing SAC ANA week report

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,968 ✭✭✭✭✭
For me I feel that my ANA has already started since I am busy until the ANA is over. For the past couple days I have been at the McIntosh Spring show which has the feel of a preshow. The show has been well attended as these shows usually are. As expected items that are bullion related are moving and being asked for. I am in the back corner of the room, not the best for traffic but still had some pretty decent sales the frirst couple days. Have seen several forum members in attendance and expect to see many more next week. Overall it has been a fun show to be behind the table.

I have picked up a few more items than I had planned on and hope to keep on buying

This show goes through tomorrow. Then Mon and Tues I am teaching an ANA course then Weds is the ANA setup followed by the show. I plan on updating this thread throughout the next couple days with more reporting.

Sunday 3-13-11:

Being daylight savings and a Sunday the slow started a little show but in the end for a Sunday attendance was pretty good. Attendees and dealers both were rolling in a little late. Again people came by looking for silver. We had a couple bring there 5 year old by so she could pick out some silver. She got a few proofs dimes, a proof Frankie , and I think something else. She the went into here pouch with a little help from mom and got out her $21 bucks and put her silver in her pouch. All in all a pretty good show. Today wrapped up around 3. Luckily I did not spend as much today but did end up buying a roll of barbers from PonyExpress88 among other things. Tomorrow is the first day of class for the ANA. I am looking forward to this class, should be loads of fun.

Monday 3-14-11:

First day of my Introduction to Digital Photography course. I really enjoy these courses, the students are there ad eager to learn. It is a complete mix of of all people. Some have great cameras, some so-so and some did not even have a camera to bring but everyone is learning. By the end of today I think I saw everyone taking some good images and I think the images are better than many expected they could shoot with their equipment. Spending time teaching and helping others learn is not a part of this hobby I thought I would ever be a part of but now that I am able to help others I want to make the most of it. All members of the class were engaged and ready to learn. Tomorrow I will cover some basic editing and try and have the students shoot more photos. I know for some that are not used to shooting multiple coins at a time it is burnout but as I told a reluctant shooter today, it is forced learning when you are in my class. I want all of them to get the most out of the class. To my surprise the students barely took a lunch and the class began early. Also met a few members of the ANA staff and spent some time this evening chatting with them.

Tuesday 3-15-11
Second day of class and also the final day of class. I was happy that the class came in with some questions from the night before and several were amazed at what the right white balance was doing for them. About half the class had issues cropping a coin so I did a demonstration that along with several other things. Overall I think the class went quite well. I know I learned a few things that I will be doing different for the next class. A couple people had to cut out a little early today but I think some were also burnt out from doing photos. The class was very mixed on levels of experience, some had better equipment than me and others had no equipment, still everyone worked well together. I am surprised how tiring teaching a course is. I have been whipped at then end of the day on both days. I then packed up and rolled everything across the street and into the secure room. It will be great to not have to bring it all today, will make for a much easier day. I got to pek at the bourse and it looks great and is very big. This morning I need to catch up on since I haven't been able to do much work for the past few days then off to setup. The ANA sounds pleased that they filled 7 more tables the past couple days. Pretty much a sold out bourse but there may be just a couple empties left.

Wednesday 3-16-11:
Finally setup is here, thought setup was quick only 3 hours. Got there early ran into several people and chatted for a while. Then headed into lot viewing and cruised through some coins. Have some hopes up on a couple auctions. One is already well above any guides or sales I can find for the coin. Setup went well. Got things up and going, shot some coins and walked around a bit. Shot a fun PCGS 65 high relief Saint that was a real looker. I am next to Angel Dee's, and teased him some that some websites have images nowadays. If you are at his table say Hi to me next door. Overall it looks like a real good sized bourse and hope the next couple days are busy. I know I have my hands full for a while. No purchases so far, hope to have some tomorrow. I think my table location is great so look forward to the bourse opening tomorrow. I saw the normal cast of characters from the boards before and during setup, I cant list them all.

Thursday 3-17-11:
I missed the report since I left home at 7:15 in the morning and got home about 11:00. My day was very busy but overall traffic seemed low. I bought one coin the 1885 DMPL below. Overall I had a great day with friends and was hoping for some more traffic tomorrow.

Friday 3-18-11:
Forecast was bad for today. We were in early before the rain and heard it was pouring hard during the day. By the time we left it was very crisp out but not raining. More traffic today but still slower than I would have expected. Todays coins I got to shoot was even better than yesterday. I had a steady run of coins all day long. Was able to spend time with people at the table showing some coins and sharing some stories. I get to share time with some great people at my table during these shows and that really brings the fun into being behind the table. Dealers around me are having mediocre shows. Some seem busy, others are not. Tomorrow's forecast is more rain, not sure how that will effect attendance. Today my brother and nephew and brother stopped by. Was a little more challenging shooting coins while my nephew was placing everything from the treasure hunt on the copystand. He had a blast and came back from the hunt with lots of coins and cancelled stock cert and all sorts of other good stuff. Even monsterman came over to say how there were several similar looking people all at one table. One more report to follow, then I would hope for some rest on Sunday but it will instead be spent organizing photos.

Saturday 3-19-11:
Final day for the show and there were a good amount of kids at the show. Unfortunately this day did not bring a huge amount of traffic. talking to dealers one had a great show, a few were good, several told me they made it work (I assume this normally means they moved a few things last minute to cover expenses), and several said it was bad. As others have mentioned an unusually cold storm was in town and I am sure that did not help things. I also dont know where the advertising was. At the pre-show I would mention the ANA and people did not know about it. Talking to another local dealer who did not attend, I asked him if he saw any ads and he said just the article on the nugget. Andy (Angel Dees) next to me was having me do photos of coins he sold over 1k. I did 3 images for him as he did not have a good show. Others around me seemed very slow. For my table sales were bad, but images were good. I am not sure on how many total coins as I am still working through the edits. Towards the end I also picked up an 1899-O micro O, as that is a coin now needed for most major Morgan sets.

All in all, I had a good show for imaging but was disappointed by traffic. I think the venue is good, location is good but something needed to be done to get people there.

That first 1880-S with the reverse toning I owned for about 20 minutes on Saturday. I made a whopping $6 on that coin.

Ya know, that is better than losing $6 on the coin.

80-P is a 63++ DMPL despite the scuffs on the face and the planchet flaw on the rev.

A great service rendered in sharing your state-of-the-art knowledge and experience.

A shame I think F-stop is something I heard a lot in bed from my 1st wife.

I agree on the 1880-P. It has a great look. Added some comments on Sunday also.

So how's, the ANA photography class going Todd? How many students do you have? Are they going to be mini-Todd's when you're through with them?

I had 8 students which is right about the limit I put on the class. The students were taking good pictures at the end regardless of camera.

You suck!! Congrats on the doily dmpl. You may have the first CAC certified doily dmpl on planet earth. Got your pm and had to go searching to find out what you got.

Thanks for the report. Nuce pickups!

BTW, That first 80-S has the bottom part of the mint mark missing. Is that a common trait with this year/mint? Or is this a VAM?

    Just curious.
