Wife's change bowl......

Uncirculated 30 year old coins! Sure wish I knew when she got them or
where! All three from 1981! Times must be tough as someone is spending
their rolls or collection. We are still at 14% unemployment here in Vegas.

The previous owner only had $.12 in change... however, an astute coin collector, in partnership with PCGS, could have $.12 in change and hundreds of dollars in plastic! image

  • I used to find wheat cents about once every three or four years. But, I have found at least five in the last year and a half--one as old as 1944. I agree that the economy seems to be pulling coins out of change jars, back into circulation. So far, no silver coins showing up from my end, but I'll keep looking.

  • Here in Colorado in the few (3 ) cities where we too have gambling we are seeing the same thing. One elderly lady is spending crisp new uncirculated early 1950's ten dollar bills. Quite a few silver quarters are appearing in video poker machines. (Yes we have paper in/ paper out but some folks just prefer the actual coins so we still have that too).

Sometimes it seems to be that they are old and lonely and have had this stuff kicking around forever and figure they might as well get an afternoon's worth of entertainment out of it. The parking lot attendants sometimes get the offer of jewelry but that's usually from the men. The gals will spend the old man's (living or dead) stash long before they part with their jewelry.

I read your LV Sun newspaper online Bob. It's a good paper and you're lucky to have it. Things do sound tough out there ( we have snowboarding and brewpubs and medical as well as gambling here so no one sector can hurt us too badly.) God bless young people! They saw the future and made it happen here. We've got photovoltaics, wind power, gray water systems, all manner of outdoor recreation, and whoo-hoo some of the liveliest craps tables I believe you could desire. ( Perspective of strict on-looker you understand, this fellow's wallet is good only for cushioning one cheek when I sit.)

I guess though that really we oldsters represent what you are finding in your wife's change bowl. Those are the remnants ( albeit valuable ones) of an era past. The youngsters represent ........(if I could exactly say, I would. But it's gonna be OK to OK +)

3 or 5 or 7 years from now, when Vegas is JFR again, you'll wonder that we had ever deigned to remark upon this.

A bit off topic but you are correct. We have not diversified enough here in the desert. We don't have
the Rockies at hand nor the Sierras. A bit boring for the kids in many respects.
I had an old lady here turn me down on wheats at 3¢ each and said she'd just spend them! Will
make a lot of kids happy and I was not upset!

I don't know about memorial cents being worth 3¢ apiece. Maybe, but not
    by me!

Melt value on pre-1982s is about 2.8 cents each.
