When were coins first counterfeited ?
Here is a plated or clad counterfeit of an ancient Lydian trite that dates back to 610-546 B.C., one of the earliest known counterfeit coins ever produced. And the fakes haven't stopped since..........

(Looks like a foure - made by wrapping a base metal core with gold or silver, then striking the fake coin. If the precious metal is thin, it might also have been coated with a mercury amalgam.)
