When were coins first counterfeited ?

Here is a plated or clad counterfeit of an ancient Lydian trite that dates back to 610-546 B.C., one of the earliest known counterfeit coins ever produced. And the fakes haven't stopped since..........

...about 5 minutes after the King turned his back ?

(Looks like a foure - made by wrapping a base metal core with gold or silver, then striking the fake coin. If the precious metal is thin, it might also have been coated with a mercury amalgam.)

Throughout history counterfeiting carried the death penalty but there's always a few that thought it was worth taking the chance.

Considering the rather low rate of information transfer pre-Web, probably about two months after they passed through the hands of the representative of the Shanghai Mint, which of course was not founded until 227 BC.

You can imagine the surprised look on Eve's face when Adam placed a plastic apple on the dining table and when he gave Cain and Abel a rubber snake for their birthday! image
