<< <i>Sorry. I only had to view the reverse to realize this is an "Alex coin" (nicetoning2007). Those golden browns are the 'tell' along with the obverse blend of colors. >>
Bingo.
Collector of Large Cents, US Type, and modern pocket change.
.... LOL. That washington is still AT, a green bean and a grade bump isn't changing my mind. I've seen Alex's work and remember when Pat sold a bunch of them on ebay, same exact toning patterns, colors, and large spotting on both sides.
I think this '46s was one of the best jobs he did with
.........I did not catch it until just this moment .
So I sell the coin in a 66 holder because I was told and believed it was a no doubt A.T job ........
and frankly I was afraid of the coin , paid huge money for it and thought PCGS would bag it maybe if it was in for a re-grade ..........
Now , not only is it not bagged
........it's gone up a grade point and it's got a freakin' bean to boot !!!!!!!
just suppose for the sake of argument , the artist came forward and provided evidence it was his masterful work - an extraordinary A.T job .......
suppose PCGS was privy to his style of work and was on the lookout for such pieces ..........
A small hoard of them got holdered , but PCGS got wise and bagged them if submitted today .........
So they get it ........get a fresh take on it ........and not only fail to see it for what it is ,
they make it market acceptable and to further pour salt on the wound - they kick it up a point !
And then the all powerful and knowing CAC , which preaches expertise on culling out even the best A.T stuff , further pushes my face in the mud and blesses it too
..........and the savvy owner of the coin now stands to fill his pockets with riches beyond his wildest dreams ,
and I get to chalk up another case of selling a coin 'cause I believed it to be A.T'd ; only to see it later in a higher graded holder worth multiples of what I sold it for !
WOW ........I gotta compliment the owner ...and gotta kick myself in the butt all in one post
when I learned the 46-S Quarter was "done" , I knew a PCGS MS-65 Franklin in my set was from the same Doctor ......... it's colors and pattern were the spitting image of the Quarter .
I had paid 1500$ for the half, and felt I was lucky the orig. seller was gracious enough to buy it back from me for $750 .
Now I won't be shocked when I see that same half in a PCGS MS 66 + holder with a gold bean .........
Paul, i feel your frustration and perhaps understand how you've grown a bit on-edge over the past year or so. it can be tough going if you enjoy toned coins. i don't have nearly the experience some mebers have so i'm often forced to trust my instincts, my narrow scope of understanding and who i buy from. the coins below might show what some of that is. ---the first Washington is a coin i bought raw for just over spot when Silver was around $12 and it graded at PCGS the first time with most members liking it(some say AT) and thinking it's OK. ---the New Hampshire SHQ is a coin which has been called AT here in the past, yet it came from an old timer who still keeps stuff in those envelopes like he's been doing for decades. ---i bought the Buffalo raw from a dealer stock box. members have said they think it's suspect while admiring similarly toned T1's from others, so go figure. ---the little group of 1962 Jeffersons is telling for me; three coins that look quite similar "in hand" together though the pictures don't. i think they make a very clear point!! ---the bottom group of pixilated coins are all Jeeferson Nickels i clipped from Proof Sets and submitted to PCGS. the color is accurate and they all graded on the first trip through.
i could post other coins but you should get the idea. there comes a time when you need to trust yourself despite what others tell you. i have come to accept that sometimes coins just don't follow the rules, they do as they choose despite our knowledge to the contrary.
...........I lost the ability to trust my own instincts and knowledge awhile back -
coins I knew to be wholesomely original came back from PCGS as A.T , and coins doctors were getting submitted came back graded ..........
I trust PCGS plain and simple, sure they make mistakes - but I'm betting today they get it right 95 % of the time .
I like the blue 53-S Quarter , and it's just fine in my set until somebody can convince me it was "done"
..........if that day comes , I will cull it out of my set .
I sold the 46-S because there was overpowering verbal and written testimony given to me , from people I respect and believe in , that the evidence was undeniable that that coin was "done" ,
that it was known who did it , and that both PCGS and NGC were aware of the "look" and were no longer grading coins from that doctor .........
It was good enough information for me , but I'm not forcing it down anyone's throat
it is peculiar that those who do this type of stuff seem to settle in on a "pattern" which eventually becomes detectable. the thing about toned coins is their uniqueness, and when they look really nice, the attention they command. why would an "expert" make a Quarter that looks like the Dollar that looks like the Commem that looks like the Dime they made and think they'll elude detection??

now that's what I'm talkin' about :
honest constructive criticism

<< <i>I pryed this 58 out of a virgin double Mint set today. No chance of AT here and I think the 46 is NT as well!
That coin, a mint set toner and common (and NT) as such, looks nothing like the 46-S, IMO, pictured below for comparison:
for me to be comfortable with spending 275$ on a 75$ coin - I got to love the coin alot ;
and I do

Heritage Central States with a Green Bean Sticker
It must be a nice coin after all.
<< <i>Well for all of ya'll that thought the 46-S was AT or torched...

WHAT does it matter ?
It's a fantastically toned coin in a PCGS holder with a green bean -
what more could anyone ask for ?
