I would say they are. If he cannot grade, he should have left it in the holder.

In layman's terms... The scum bag cracked it out and is now playing stupid as he's not disclosing it is a molested coin.

  • Could that not be likened to cracking out a coin and resubmitting hoping for a higher grade ?

Doubtful... But then I'm from the Trust No One generation! image

Edited to add: This is a very common game played on EBay!

Forum member GoldenEyeNumismatics catches cracked issue seated material sold as problem free by sellers who are dumbing themselves down all the time.

Are you sure same photos? I don't see the NGC tabs on the Ebay photos.....could have been photoshopped.

Has anyone contacted the seller for info yet?

(ETA....nevermind.....I see he cropped the photos in Ebay to hide the tabs!)

I emailed the seller, without providing a link, and she said that "I don't buy coins". So, I'm assuming
nothing at this point. I've now sent her the link to the Teletrade auction and we'll see what she says.

Look at the sellers other listings. They're playing the "I don't have a clue game". Here's the text from another listing:

<< <i>I WAS TOLD TO SEND THIS OUT TO PCGS TO BE GRADED THAT IT MIGHT BE VALUABLE.

I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT COINS AND REALLY JUST WANT TO GET RID OF EVERYTHING THAT MY EX OWNED

I UPLOADED NICE PHOTO OF THE EXACT COIN YOU WILL GET....SO PLEASE GRADE THIS YOURSELF BECAUSE I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

IF I COULD TELL YOU MORE I WOULD >>

    Serious load of crap.

Not in my view. In your example, they are sending it in for expert evaluation.
In the auction, they likely know the expert opinions and are not relaying those to prospective buyers who are not experts.

Russ labeled the seller correctly, imho.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Your like everyone else entitled to an opinion , doesnt make it right though. I don't think its as clear cut as made out , a collectors crack coins for many reasons. Id hope bidders on trade dollars would have some experience and not the novices intimated. The seller may well have been outed rightfully and for other reasons , cracking a slab isnt top of the list.
  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yep. I believe they have been outed.
To me, there is a difference in cracking a coin from a TPGS holder, that was graded with an opinion, and not stating that but selling it as a raw coin, versus cracking out one that a TPGS has labeled as a PROBLEM coin and not disclosing that....particularly in an online auction. Matters not to me if a buyer SHOULD know the series before buying it....what matters to me is that people be treated like others want to be treated. I doubt the seller wants people to be deceitful, and I do believe that the seller IS being deceitful.

No worries, I wouldn't buy from a seller like that anyway.

  • the first trade dollar coin is TELETRADEs photo that has black circles cropped around the coin

whether the seller actually has the coin is another question

but if they were going to try a scam, you would think that they would use a more valuable coin

The two coins that I posted are also previous "Genuine" purchases from TT and sold with a story. Both coins are currently being sold without any disclaimer of previously being housed in slabs as "Problem" coins. So sad.
