  I have seen very similar gouges on Peace dollars. Are these due to feeding fingers?

  No, this is into the coin. It's caused by the operator who used a filing tool to remove some type of imperfection on the die.... which creates an imperfection.... .

  Stick with a space theme. My dad was on the USS Kearsarge when it picked up a couple of Mercury capsules. One with Schirra and the other with Cooper. Zippo put out a commemorative lighter. I need to send this back to them to have the paint restored, but considered dad smoked, this saw quite a bit of use before disposable lighters dropped in price...

  Thats funny...my dad was on the Kearsarge too when they picked up Grissom and a couple of the others...my dad interacted with Grissom on board after the pickup and had a totally different view of what happened, ie: the hatch was not released accidentally. But of course the coolest of the cool (ie: astronauts back then) could never be portrayed as losing their cool.
