I'm expecting a Genuine, but will PCGS grade this 1793 Liberty Cap Cent?

She isnt pretty, but not many of them are. Will she grade, or end up in a Genuine holder?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
<< <i>Imho, they should only "GEN" it, at best. >>

I know it is a valuable coin, even in this condition, but let's face it. It's a slug.

It's a slug I would love to have in my collection.

Me too. So I could sell it and have money to buy something else
I'll vote Genuine.

You bad.
So what's a slug like this go for?
The possibilities for a coin that looks like this range from Questionable Authenticity to No Decision to GEN to PO-01 or something like that.

<< <i>A solid AG3 sold for $350 wholesale at the SLNA (then went to $400 retail). A Genuine PO1 should sell for $75-$125? >>
Was it a 1793 liberty cap? Seems way too cheap for a key date large cent.

This is a very scarce coin, less than 150 known in ANY condition.
As to authenticity, we spent a lot of time on this when Ankur posted it last summer. It's the real deal. And if you want a "nice" one, you better be prepared to wait
a long time, and spend a bunch of money when one comes up.
certain what our host will grade the coin (some of the members of the boards seem unreasonably
certain about nearly everything!), I think a "straight" grade of Poor-1 is the right determination.
<< <i>It might have if the two holes/pits weren't in the prime focal area but since they are you have 0% chance, I would put money on it. >>
I was thinking that without the pits, it had a very good chance at a grade.
1793 1C Liberty Cap Genuine PCGS. S-13, B-20, Low R.4. The PCGS number ending in .97 suggests Environmental Damage as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of a Very Good specimen that has extensive environmental damage. All letters and digits can be observed when the piece is examined beneath a light, but the dark brown and lavender surfaces are rough, especially on the striated obverse. MRB AG3. (#1359)

.....even the lowest grades should go for good money..........I don't know.....$1000?.........$4000?.......
.......oh, and I like it........

ill secont that.
<< <i>Have had this for over a year, bought from a board member who knew I was looking for one. >>
I heard he sold it for ~$300 less than you offered him for it - must be a heck of a guy
<< <i>PCGS won't have any trouble determining what it is. And they can be pretty forgiving with a coin like this. But given the combination of issues it has...surface corrosion, rim damage, scratches, etc. I think it will come back in a genuine holder.

<< <i>This coin is worth around $3000. >>
While I dont personally think it would grade, I definetly think getting it into a pcgs slab (even genuine) is a must do.
<< <i>llafoe - I think you have your varieties confused. The last AG brought $9800 in Heritage in 2008.

Yup!
It's funny, was talking to Ankur the other night about how I might like to buy a chain cent. Problem is, ones that have the look I like cost as much as a new 7 series BMW and are rare as heck.

Yepper - I had my wife with me when we bought this large cent, along with the 1799, the 15 stars 1817, the 23/3, the 39/6, and about 15 other large cents that came out of this estate.....my wife has to co-sign on our money market account checks, which I only use for 'substantial' purchases.....her eyes were glazed over as the wow came out of her mouth.....not about the coins, but that she was thinking we could pay off a good chunk of the mortgage, instead we were bringing back these 18 junky old coins!

<< <i>A coin worth owning in any condition, IMO. I think the embedded pebble keeps it in a Genny holder. But no shame in that! >>
Agreed.
<< <i>I've seen much worse in graded holders. I'd say you have a legit P01 there. --Jerry >>
I'd need to see those pix to compare; until then, I'm in the genuine camp.
