1942-D / Horizontal D Jefferson Nickel

BigDowgieBigDowgie Posts: 1,780 ✭✭✭✭
There has not been any recent sales of this Jefferson Nickel variety. I've only noticed non-MS coins being offered for sale. I'm curious what folks are wanting in their collections, AU (or less) or MS samples? Also, what kind of money do you collectors want to pay for this one? Does Full Step designation on this one matter?

Thanks

there aren't very many D/D around and even though 1942-D isn't difficult in Full Steps the D/D variety is more difficult by degree due to its scarcity. the variety is clear enough to see on coins worn down to Fine and i think that's the reason that collectors don't clamor for Full Steppers.

Define recent, I bought this coin from the summer FUN sale last July. It is a shame because if this coin had better luster, I think it would easily grade MS65.

Given that the populations of this coin in the MS grades is less than 20, I don't see how anyone could insist upon a full step example. And to my knowledge, there are no certified full step 1942-D over Horizontal D Jeffersons.

    Lehigh96,

I only checked Heritage and not Bowers. I'll say, very few come up for sale each year and prices vary. Last I checked, PCGS has graded 8 or 9 full step examples with 15 or so non-FS. This is a toughie!

Also, you have a very nice one! I would agree, a little mint luster would have produced a different result. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Oops! I was looking at the NGC population report only. You are right, PCGS is at 9 with FS. I will say that I am not willing to pay over $10K for any Jefferson Nickel and am very satisfied with my example.

One of my all-time favorite varieties in any series... I've found a few, but none in high grades.

It's one of my favorites as well but seems quite elusive even worn.

This date is underrated I think in Unc since it's tough to find and the variety is no more common in unc.

  • all mine sit in an SDB-even the ones I sold to members for use in their reg sets with stipulation
they come back to me when ready to be sold. (after they updated)

and yes everyone was true to their word, all were sold back for what they paid.

Board members with Jefferson reg sets rock!

That is a beauty! What is the assumed mintage of the D/D or assumed percentage of the total mintage?

    NickelCollector,

I for one, can't believe that coin is not an MS66! An absolute beauty!

As long as GOD's great green earth keeps spinning, I think we can place this one next to Franks coin as one of the best out there.

    Leo,

Thanks for pulling up the pictures. No doubt about your observation. With a little help from the Big Guy, this one may come home to papa someday!

    Catch you soon.
