Problem $500 chair - maybe a $200-300 Capped Bust Half

tydyetydye Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭
Some of you may remember a while back how my son relocated some CBHs on me. My wife recently found one a few months ago in his toy cars. And today I think I potentially may have found another. Problem is I think it is in a leather chair in my office. I hear something large and coin like in it. It is in the room I was viewing my coins in at the time. But I cant seem to get it out short of cutting it out.

These are used by mechanics to retrieve bolts and stuff, magnet on the end. Or do like the meteorite hunters...

You can replace a decent office chair for $99 at a repo depot type place. Carve it open.

If his CBH sticks to a magnet he doesn't need to find it anyways image

  • If he got it in there without making a hole in the chair, there must be a way to get it out without making a hole in the chair.

Get some proper tools and take the chair apart...you will get your coin that way.

Considering it's a chair, it could just as easily be some regular pocket change that fell out of someone's pocket. On the other hand, your curiosity will drive you crazy if you don't check it out.

You should be able to open the chair without permanently damaging it, however you may need a pro to put it back together.

Ask a furniture upholsterer how much they would charge to uncover the cushion/chassis and recover it. No biggie. I have a brother who does classic cars and street rods, which are much more difficult to work on than the average household furniture. Its a 30-60 minute job in the right hands.

Attend your local coin club meeting and invite the least ethical member to your house for dinner... during dinner, mention the lost CBH in your chair. As he leaves, frisk him and you'll recover your coin... EASY! image

Turn the chair upside down and then reach into the areas where it could have slid into. Let gravity reverse the process.

If the coin is at the bottom of the chair I would get the coin slid over to one corner and cut fist size slit in the bottom and then pull the coin out.

The slit on the bottom should not hurt or bother anyone. I would just leave the slit there for easy access to the next missing coinimage

And then the upholsterer returns two dimes and a nickel saying "that's all there was".

    Seriously, good luck.
