1904-O Barber Half in VF20/25 $185 good deal or no? Well I went back and bought it - PICS up!

I think the front might of been cleaned in the past but has since retoned. Reverse is very nice and original. Price is right around bid. I would give it 50/50 of still grading. But my intent is to stick it in my whitman album. Currently have a vg in the slot.

The 1904-O is hands down one of the toughest dates to find in mid-grades. If it's a legitimate VF20/25 coin, and if the cleaning wasn't
harsh and was done long enough ago to have retoned pleasantly... without images it's tough to make a call, but if it's as you described
then the coin is definitely worth buying at that price.

Well and went back and purchased it. Got it for $180. Picked out some others out of an album that just came in.

The obverses of the 1904-O are notoriously softly struck. That coin is NOT a VF20/25.

It's a VF35... so you did VERY well to get it for $180.00.

As Cary mentioned, you did very well on that 04-O.

Its a perfect coin for the raw book; tough date and
not easily located. Its by far the nicest in the group.

The other coin in the album I was contemplating was a 92-O in VF+ very original. But $400 and I already have that date but only in VG10

It has more 'meat' than the 04O that I bought at FUN, and I paid quite a bit more for it.
Lance Hipps (whom I respect as one of the top young up and coming dealers in the country) said this is a very tough and underrated date. I later showed my coin to Mike Hayes and Glenn, and they both said I did well on the coin - which means you did extremely well on yours!

Re: the 92S - at $400, it's $75 UNDER Greysheet VF 20 Bid.....that makes it a no-brainer. Borrow the money if you have to, or put it on layaway - you'll be kicking yourself for years if you don't. And when you go back, explain how you already bought all these other coins, can't he help you out and lower the price a bit

Nice coin. I will be looking at my set this week some time. I have two coins to put in it and I don't remember what my 04-O looks like, so I will be on the look out.

GET THAT 92-O RIGHT NOW!!!!!

You suck, you suck very muck on that 04-O. First, it's a lock 35. Second, that's a VERY tough and underrated date as others have said. I think that I paid Chris (Manorcourtman) $500-550ish for my VF35, granted it's an original coin and is slabbed by PCGS but that's a very tough coin that you just don't find in that grade.

And when you do, take the greysheet and burn it.

1. Great pickup on the 04O!
2. The album collection is looking awesome! Keep going, man, and stay with that look, be picky!!
3. Go back and get that 92O, right now! I sold 2 nice F15s over 2 years ago for over $600, jimdimmick sold a F15 as well for $650, his and one of mine both had the same depression in the neck ? sawdust or some other stuff on the die.

Yes, by all means, don't use the same tool that most of the dealers in the country use - you wouldn't want to underpay for anything!
What I'm really saying is, use the sheet to your advantage when you can, but don't be a slave to it when you come across exceptional
pieces. Know that some coins go for well in excess of sheet prices - but that doesn't mean you always have to PAY this when you find one at the 'sheet dealer' tables.

You got a good deal on that one. I also like the 03' right above it in your dansco set. I have always considered the 1903 to be a fairly tough date, and haven't owned many examples of that date over the years.

In fact, I have an XF40, but have never had the opportunity to find or buy one in choice VF.

You are on your way towards a nice set.

As we all know you CAN find better or sleeper date Barber Halves in VF/XF at sheet, but the vast majority of knowledgeable dealers who handle such coins realize that, for most of them, sheet is meaningless. IMO, buying any of them, certified, at sheet unless it's a commonish coin (12-D) constitutes a cherrypick.

The lowest I have ever seen a problem-free PCGS 04-S sell for, as an example, is about 160% of bid for a so-so VF20.
