Question about purchasing modern coins for a type set

I enjoy looking thru lots of coins for my type set that I am putting together. It is a relaxing, fun way for me to spend some time. My question is about the newer coins that go into a type set, what mint sets would I need to fill the modern holes. I just don't get the same enjoyment looking at the newer coins. I thought I might be able to pick up a few mint sets that would plug as many holes without much effort and money spent compared to purchasing these coins individually. Just wondering if this would be a good way to go.

Thanks,

Yep, the 1976 would definately be one set. Maybe the 1963 set for the Franklin and a 1965 sms. for the Kennedy.

I really wasn't that into the moderns either. I just used proofs of the moderns in my album as they looked much cooler to me.

Whether you choose to go with proofs or business strikes, you'll need a 1976 set if you are going to collect the bicentennial reverses and/or 40% silvers as a seperate type.

You'll also need a set with an SBA Dollar. I picked 1980 cause it's really cheap and my birthyear.

You could also get one of the 1970s sets to get an Ike Dollar, but remember that the 40% silver Ikes were sold separately in proof and BU so you could pick up one of those if that is the only coin you need.

Wouldn't it be cool to have an album that holds each annual Mint Set as it was offered?

Depending on the number of coins in the set, might take two to complete a "page" for some, and two pages to complete one YEAR! for others.

I've never seen anything like this, but could there be someone out there in album-land who's light bulb already turned on? image

  • I would consider a basic type set of circulating modern coins to include one example from each series in the modern era. Using the first year of issue as an example:

    -1971 Ike Dollar
    -1976 Bicentennial mint set
    -1979 SBA Dollar
    -2000 Sacagawea
    -2007 Presidential Dollar (George Washington)
    -2009 Native American Dollar
    -1948 Franklin Half
    -1964 Kennedy Half
    -1932 Washington Quarter
    -1999 State Quarter (Delaware)
    -2009 National Park Quarter(Hot Springs)
    -1946 Roosevelt Dime
    -1938 Jefferson Nickel
-2004 Westward Journey Nickel (Peace Medal)
    -2008 Return to Monticello Nickel
    -1959 Lincoln Memorial Cent
    -2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent (Childhood)
    -2010 Lincoln Shield Cent

It would probably be easiest to just buy a graded example of each of the above rather than cutting up mint sets.

Thanks for that list Vann, that is an interesting idea. I had not thought about first year of issues for the moderns.
