Which Dealer is the #2 Lightning Rod in the Industry?

CoinosaurusCoinosaurus Posts: 9,645 ✭✭✭✭✭
We all know who #1 is, there seems to be a new thread about them nearly every day.

Who comes next after them?

I think that we must not confuse forum lightning rod for industry lightning rod. I do agree with #1. Whoever is #2 is a distant #2.

Is there really a second place or are all others just wannabees image

To RYK: I think this forum represents a reasonable enough cross-section of the "industry" to serve
    as a proxy.

To Dimeman: A "lightning rod" is an agent that stirs controversy.

No,no,no, and no. Not even close in terms of gross sales or importance to the industry (which should really be the LARGEST factor to being the lightning rod). None of those 4 has any "real" bearing on the health of the coin industry other than flashing a big auction price realized on occasion or making more tv coins. Think ferrari gross sales vs gm. Ferrari could disappear and the industry wouldnt even hiccup. Maybe some sad look what they were programs on the history channel. Thats it.

Lightning rod = the guy whose checkbook is the most important in the industry. Who buys/sells and is really the heart of the industry?

someone who is a frequent target of negative reactions and serves to distract attention from another.

I think D Carr is #1 on that list

Hmm i mistook the term in my first post but its still

Ebay and/or dirtbag ebay sellers (like a train crash in your backyard you cant help but be fascinated. Overgraded crap, cleaned crap, fake crap, and outright fraudulent listings far outweigh the few nice coins and legits. Most blame ebay without really trying to stamp out the idiot resellers. We all know the guys when they come in our shops and their checks are good. blah blah blah. I boot em when I catch my stuff being resold and misrepresented on fleabay. Good for a distraction and the occasional nice pick.)

TV merchants (we hate em but secretly envy them for their ability to sell items at many multiples of retail and keep a straight face. Yet when most of the big buys for generic widgets are placed on cce where do we think theyre going? Alas where would I ship all those widget proof sets, wheat cents etc. GREAT entertainment and full of ACCURATE information. The other night I learned that morgan and peace dollars contained one whole ounce of pure silver looool),

mail order dirtbags (see above for the most part except far smarter in actual numismatic knowledge. Usually sells misrepped material.)

probably the evil b & m coin shop for #4 (The evil few make for great stories. Just like the supposed evil diamond stealing jewelry stores...that happens very very rarely and usually signals the impending closure of said store. These guys are the worst of the worst according to at least half of the forum.)

You sound as if you are confusing the meaning of "lightening rod" with something else. It's defined as " One that attracts and absorbs powerful, typically negative feelings and reactions, thereby diverting interest from other issues".

One can't correctly be labeled a "wannabee" something or other, unless they want to be that something or other. And typically, one does not want to be a lightening rod.image

Mark is not a lightning rod,
    magnetic field, perhaps.

I had lunch with John Albanese in early 2009. I told him I would buy because I wanted to sit down with someone at the center of the current action. His response: "If you can find him, ask him along, and I'll buy for the three of us".

But your use of "lightning rod" is poor. As Coinguy1 said, it's about upon whom we focus our excess negative energy. Most of the biggest checkbooks simply represent business acumen. Your conflation of the two might easily say more about you than about them.
