Why doesn't PCGS offer coin conservation services?

Same reason they don't slab most SCD's, they don't want to go down that road right now.

OK... so use NCS to have them conserved. I don't see why it's necessary to wait for PCGS to integrate this service into their business model.

Just got a coin back from PCGS. It was a jefferson nickel with a spot of PVC on the reverse. The coin came back sans PVC in the same grade as it was submitted in.

I don't think I was talking bad as I was speaking of my one experience with the particular type serivce, but to please you, I went ahead and remove my post.

a local dealer had an early Dollar, a 1796 or thereabout, and it went bad in the holder so he sent it to PCGS. none other than HRH eventually called inquiring about what had happened to the coin. several weeks later it returned in a new holder and with the contamination removed. this was about 3-4 years ago. i think PCGS probably does what they have to do to honor their gaurantee, they most probably just don't want to offer it as a service. i look at it this way-----if you assemble some of most highly recognized members of the Numismatic fraternity, they probably know how to conserve coins.

The fact that PCGS doesn't "conserve" coins is a huge reason why I prefer them over NGC. I have no problem with "conservation" if it prevents damage or further damage to a coin, I do have a problem with "conservation" when it alters a coin in a shot to improve its' grade. NCS has "conserved" coins in ways that I consider to be unforgivable (93-S Morgan anyone?).

Joking of course but there are many "one off" situations being mentioned here that don't get to the heart of the question as to why CU doesn't have a conservation service. My opinion is that CU saying "we don't have that service" is their way of differentiating themselves, just as NGC's saying "we do have that service" is THEIR way of differentiation. Explicitly NOT offering conservation services is CU trying to take the higher road, in my opinion, whether that's right or not is a judgement call for each collector to make.

Few years ago when NCS began PCGS was set to announce a new conservation service similar to NCS. At the last moments PCGS decided against it and since then the idea hasn't seriously resurfaced.

I had an MS67 38-D Buffalo that had a white splotch on it. I sent it in under the guarantee, and it came back nice and clean and with a different cert #
