Newp 1812 Bust Half! Thoughts on the grade?

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
Just got this 1812 Bust Half in today. Graded NGC AU58, but will probably cross at PCGS as AU50 or AU53. The luster is booming in hand! An upgrade from my current XF40.
Looks like a widget compared to DDM's new one! image

And here is an 1832 Bust Half with new images. Was NGC AU53 (another overgraded bustie in NGC plastic), now PCGS XF45. A slight upgrade from my current XF40, but a much nicer example with toning.

Thanks for looking!

    Very nice busties Ankur.

I like your 1812, looks to have nice luster, good luck on the cross image
  • The 1812 looks better than a 50. Should go 53 and maybe 55.

I agree with the 1832 though, XF45 is a conservative grade - making it a very strong 45.

I happen to agree with RedHerring, if your 1812 has sufficient luster, it has a chance at a 55, but I can't see PCGS bumping her all the way down to a 50.

Here is a PCGS AU53 that I sold recently to forum member Frozenink when I upgraded my 1812.

Here is a coin I bought raw because I loved how original the surfaces were. Was in an NGC G6 holder, and to my surprise upgraded to a VG8!
    The surfaces are amazingly clean.

    Ankur:

Here is my 1812 50c graded PCGS AU-53. It was originally in an OGH. It was cracked in half when I received it in the mail. I kept it anyway. JA would not sticker it until it was reholdered. That was a crisis point for me. I relented and had it reholdered into the blue label. Green stickered.

Yours looks to be closer to an AU-50 as I cannot get a feel for the luster.

I misplaced the picture link for the reverse.

Oreville, from the obv of your 1812, it looks to have 55-58 wear, but the luster usually decides the grade in cases with little wear.

Would love to see the rev image

Oreville, if yours is an AU53, then mine would be an XF45! imageimage

But the luster is quite nice on this one. Just so hard to capture both toning and luster together. Why is NGC so off on these?

I think you are looking at 53. It looks at peace in its present holder, so not sure why you want it in new plastic unless you are gunning for the registry.

  • Luster can be very strong on these early date Bust Halves. I have a VF 20 1812 O-105 IDS that has XF 45 luster on it, among many others with what would be considered moderate wear, but the luster remaining does not make sense for the wear.

That said, the grade on the coin will be based on the graders weighing luster vs wear. If NGC thought it to be a 58 at the time, and the coin has lots of luster, then u can assume that luster carried the day for the grade. I think you said the luster is terrific, but from what I have seen from PCGS and even NGC lately, you probably would end up with a 53 today, or maybe a 55 on eye appeal. Unless that discoloration on the chin and hair is just that and not flat spots, which could get you to 58.

I like the AU58 1812. I think it was probably dipped long ago, but it's retoned naturally and in a very pretty manner.

I have noticed over the years that nearly all 1812 and 1813 bust halves in AU-Unc. have been dipped at some point. There are many that have developed colored toning as a result. Has anyone else noticed the same thing? It's unusual to find a coin of these dates with strong luster, which still has 100% of the original gray filth clinging to its surfaces- and none of the bright colors. Anyone have one?

I like that coin a lot. I think I would guess au-55, but I could see a 53 or a 58. Reverse looks 58 and it is a late dies state.

I got this one from one of Sheridan Downey's mail bid sales. Sold for today's 55 money a few years ago.

This one even has a sticker (AU-53)! It got lost during the Frederick Sale and I got it relatively cheap
