Cameo & Deep Cameo

Does anyone know what year PCGS began PRC and PRDC designations?

sometime between 1990 and 1992 seems to be what members can "prove" with dated receipts. i would think that PCGS could tell us exactly when the change took place, so far either noone has asked or PCGS has chosen not to give the answer. i will take it upon myself to ask.

thanks, Don. the problem is that some member(s) have receipts dated around 1991 for coins in green label holders from the same period where the serial number begins to the left of the barcode if memory serves me correctly. i had always been under the assumption that 1995-96 was the timeframe but they keep proving me wrong. i thought PCGS could delve into their archives and come up with a narrow time to put this to rest.

it seem clear that 1991-92 is as good as we'll get.

One member has a copy of a 1992 pop report that lists coins with the designation.

If Tomaska knows anything about proofs...it looks like 1992 is the year.

Actually, there were two rollout dates. The first was only for 1950-1970 per Don's post. (I recalled this was only for 1950-1964, but I am probably wrong.) I agree that this happened around 1992 or so.

Then there was another date where moderns from 1971 to date were designated. This happened several years later - I'm not sure exactly when this happened, but would guess around 1996 or so - maybe later. Here is a non-designated coin from that era - the PCGS 5 slab was used from sometime in 1995 to October 1998.

I sure wish we could get some definitive answers as this question comes up about every 6 months or so.

  • I am surprised that there are still some of these just laying around. $30. Really?

This 1995-W PR Eagle was sent into PCGS and graded in 1995 so it must have been 1996 when PCGS started using the DCAM designation or late 1995.
