I can't list items on eBay now without having a credit card to automatically pay my bills each month

I tried to list some COINS tonight and i got a submission failed notice that I needed to have an automatic payment set up. What a bunch of CRAP! I use Blackthorne. I went to my ebay account and added my PayPal debit card and now I can list.. Wow, things are getting worse every day over there.

"(21917158) We noticed that you don't have a payment method set up with your eBay account. As soon as you take care of this, you'll be able to list more items."
I don't think you will get 8k+ replies to this post though.
<< <i>I guess the only payment you can take now is a check or PP!!!!!!---------------BigE >>
If you check, I think you'll find you can't say you take checks, either.
<< <i>You are ONLY allowed to take money orders, cashiers checks, and personal checks in "eBay motors or mature audiences". >>
You can take checks or money orders if the buyer asks to pay that way.
I can't even write the forbidden words in my payment instructions that come after the sale.. Here is a screen shot of my blackthorne software.

You haven't been able to do that for a long time. So it seems to me, your options are A) accept the fact and get on with it or

Nope- not allowed:
Sellers aren't allowed to make statements like:
“Contact us for payment information.”
“Contact us for other payment methods.”
“Contact us for your preferred payment method.”
“Buyers may request to pay by check or money order.”
I mean Ebay owns PP and they only allow PP to be represented in an auction.
Microsoft had to allow other browsers and stuff.
I bet if a lawsuit was opened, we'd get them to allow the free market to prevail.

That's not exactly true. eBay requires that you allow some sort electronic payment option, but it doesn't have to be PayPal. If you have a merchant account, you can use that instead.
I have learned my lesson list anything I want except a zippo lighter geez thanks feebay. I have another zippo but am to scared to try and list it. LOL

The people running things don't like you having a true free market.
More control and less options.
What's new? eBay sold out a long time ago.

<< <i>You can't directly say you will take a check or money order, but the fact is you CAN still take them. >>
Yes, you can.
<< <i>The trick is clever wording so that a customer will ask you if it's OK, such as "feel free to contact us about payment options or questions". >>
According to eBay, you can't say that. From eBay's help pages:
Sellers aren't allowed to make statements like:
“Contact us for payment information.”
“Contact us for other payment methods.”
“Contact us for your preferred payment method.”
“Buyers may request to pay by check or money order.”
When eBay came out with the "no checks or money orders" policy, they had a Q&A session on the website. It was made perfectly clear that there would be no such thing as any "magic words" that would get you around the prohibition- if you were even suspected of trying, you were guilty and your listings would be ended. End of story.
If you're doing it now and haven't been caught, it's just because nobody has reported you. Yet.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't use these phrases myself, but I have seen plenty of other sellers auctions that feature similar wording.

Griff, can sellers then put a note in their listings for the buyer to contact them to use other payment methods not listed without saying what type?
- JT
pepinski9 :
Or can we say in our email to buyers contact us for other methods accepted or please let us know your preferred payment method.....
No.
Sellers will not be permitted to solicit paper payments in any way shape or form. Email, listing descriptions, etc. A seller will not be permitted to solicit buyers with a "please let us know your preferred payment method" email. If the buyer reports the seller and provides the email, the seller will risk sanctions.

Q: Is it "legal" on ebay for a buyer to even ask to pay with a money order after these changes take effect?
Yes, a buyer can ask a seller if they can pay with a Money Order or Check.
A: You may only solicit approved payment methods in your listings or communications with buyers. This means you must be explicit about the payment methods you accept, and they must be approved.
Should a buyer initiate a conversation about alternate payment methods, it is your choice to accomomdate this request.
Here are the rules as of the October release date:
A seller may not solicit or advertise that the accept paper payments, either in their listing description or in their emails sent to their buyers.
A seller may not "hint" that other than approved payment methods are accepted, for example, an email to a buyer or a line in the description that says anything along the lines of "EMail me about other payment methods." OR "Email me if you have questions about these payment methods."
Anything, and I mean anything in a seller's listing that hints or alludes to unapproved payment methods will result in the listing's removal.
Attempts to circumvent this policy will be viewed and handled as such.
If a buyer asks a seller if they will accept a paper payment, the seller may accept or decline that request.

Note that these rules were current as of August, 2008. I have no reason to believe eBay has relaxed their stand in the time since then.

How about putting THIS in your listing:

I wonder what would happen then?

The rules are not new- they're 2 1/2 years old. As to why, I'd think it's because eBay thinks it's in the best interest of the company.
<< <i>How about putting THIS in your listing: >>
Do as you like- you can list lawn darts tipped with rat poison for all I care. I'm just letting people know what eBay's stated position is on the "checks and money orders" thing.
<< <i>You can offer incentives(say $25 back stated in your auction listing) for buyers in your auction if they send a check or money order or paypal echeck which is only $5 no matter how much the item sells for. They haven't stopped this so far. >>
I've been on eBay for about 10 years, I know a lot of the tricks. I ended up just putting the picture below in my listing until someone apparently turned me in and eBay told me to take it out. I'm guessing someone turned me in because I got a message from them saying I couldn't take checks. I wasn't even trying to keep the profit from taking something other than PayPal, I gave people a discount.
The reason I posted this thread was because eBay is apparently forcing you to have automatic payment methods set up. I don't know if it's needed for listing auctions manually, but because I use ebay's Blackthorne software, I think they force their policies on us first.
