Question on gradeing a buffalo nickel

What does the term distinct date mean in the VG grade for this coin? Would this mean the full date is readable under a loop or that each number in the date is separate from each number with some depth to the date?

Thanks

I prefer you said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

Just go to the PCGS Photograde for a picture. It's worth a thousand words.
Here's a VG10, just scroll to the left a bit: PCGS PHOTOGRADE ONLINE

Distinct date simply means you make out the digits without difficulty. Full outline of each number isn't necessary.

  • Thank you. Given the pictures from photograde I would grade this buffalo as VF-25. What do others think?

On this coin, probably VF30 or 35.
If it was a 26D or any of the other myriad of poorly struck issues, it might be AU (I'm talking detail-wise).
This is a very tricky series to grade, and you cannot have a generic grading system for them. Look at LOTS of them to get a good feel for them.

I would like to see pictures of the entire coin before I attempt a grade. Call me crazy.
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.
  • I would also agree with you. A full picture is needed.

    You can say THAT again!

Memorizing all the idiosyncratic differences with the varied Buffs is daunting indeed.

I find that looking through large qty's of circ examples over the years has helped me to get a decent understanding, but moving 'up' to the MS examples is still *not* easy.

Grading most of the late 30's coins is simple enough, (though high-end AU's can be tricky,) but the early stuff is a very real challenge. >>

Well said. Lower grade Buffalos are very consistant in what comparing VG-10 or there about. But when you get into the higher grades (especially MS), the differences can be profound. Just compare an 1926-D vs a 1938-D in MS63 to see what I mean.
