Coin collectors during the Greek and Roman eras....anyone ever read anything about this??

The thought came to me the other day, were there 'numismatists' during the Greek and Roman eras of our early history? Can you imagine the "cabinet' of a wealthy Roman who specialized in Greek Gold?

Anyone ever read of, or hear this discussed anywhere?

  • I have to find a reference, but I believe the Emperor Nero (who had an interest in all kinds of art) was an avid coin collector. I also seem to remember reading about a modern collector who collected coins only of those historical figures who were known to have collected coins.

Do I remember Pope Pius V was also a collector?

Groupings of Roman coins have been found that appeared to be coin collections.
