Don't the reverses on these coins look suspiciously similar?
[edited to add] - I guess it is numismatic discovery Friday - somehow, nobody ever noticed that the reverse die on some of the 1854 $20 Kelloggs was previously used to make the 1853 $20 Moffats. This makes sense, since Kellogg was an employee of the Assay Office in 1853, and the Moffat $20s were actually an Assay Office product.

Very nice - thanks for posting both AND for the new info.

Nice toning and original but I wouldn't consider it "crusty".

How do you define "crusty"? I thought the term "crusty" applied to a dirty coin with dirt and filth packed into the recesses of the letters and other design elements.

I've always thought that it had more to do with the thickness of the original skin on the coin, although both of these have some original dirt left in the protected areas...

In any event, it's a great coin with lots of history. I love that coppery tone.

The reverse of the 1853 looks like a LDS than the 1854.....am I seeing things incorrectly??

Get rid of the Duccati photo, or make it smaller. I get it, you like your bike, most of us don't give a rat, andwe don't want to see a pic of it with every post.

Looks like the same eagle/star hub, but not the same dies. The tail of the eagle is slightly different in it's relationship to the letters. Also, the shield looks a bit different. Could be the shield is not part of the eagle/star hub?

I think the apparent differences are the result of lighting, lapping and a slight (2 degree) rotation of the coins - when I did an overlay, everything lined right up.

Sweet additions!
Any backstory on the pieces or provenance that you can share?
