I think it has to do with weight. If I had one or two coins worth $50k, no problem. If I was shipping a couple pounds of stuff, is be a little more worried. The most I've ever sent to PCGS via express mail was about $25k but I did insure it for 5k. It was a bunch of 2008-w American buffalos.

Sure feels good to save that $ when they get there though.

If it was going to Pcgs, a big heavy box is about as dumb as it gets. The folks at the post office know what Pcgs is and a large, heavy box going there overnight without insurance would be the first one a crook would pick out. A little insurance would get the post master excited cause they actually have to find out what happened before they pay out. Insurance is the only accountability you really have with packages going through the post office. If your package doesn't show up, they don't look into it, they just refund your shipping charges.

I don't know what the weight was but sounds heavy.

One more thing. It WAS insured. Express comes with $100 worth of insurance for the reasons stated above. I was speaking generally.

Like a baby. Gave it no thought 'till morning. Happily, it was already delivered.

There's a reason most private insurers insist on your using the large express box. Next to registered, it's the safest thing going. You could make an argument that it's actually safer, as it spends so little time in the posession of the USPS, is tracked every step of the way, and large boxes have a hard way finding their way into people's pants, jackets, and rucksacks.

I've done that before. Peace of mind during transit it isn't.

Mail service in the US is very reliable and overwhelming chances are it'll make it to it's destination without incident. The rare times it doesn't is when it hurts.

I guess the logic is you don't want to attract attention to the package insuring it for 45K, but I would never do it. The most I sent is probably 12k and it went registered.

I shipped my set out, valued at above 50K. Addressed it to: PC at their address. No insurance. It was registered so it was well tracked. Used the biggest box and stuffed it. Few popcorn for the difference. Took about a week, but NO worries. I've had people ship me coins valued at over 1K and only use signature required. Insurance "marks" a package for possible theft.

I'm not for sending items uninsured. OK you save $150, but the one day you're out $45,000 you'll need 300 more uninsured shipments to recoup the losses.

However, I like the big box idea. It's a lot harder to sneak anywhere with a 2ft x 2ft x 1ft box.

Holy Jeebus! And I freak out over shipping a 3-figure coin! It takes nads to self-insure a 5-figure shipment. I wouldn't do it. If you're worried about theft in transit, THAT'S WHAT THE INSURANCE IS FOR, already!

Lucky!!!! I JUST received payment on a claim for $600 (only took 3 months!!) where they never delivered an NGC MS62PL HK-19, with sig confirm. A postal employee signed her own name, and scanned it as 'delivered' at 9:14pm. I'd much rather have the HK-19, Nevada Centennial SCD, made with Nevada silver, only 2,526 struck, sold an MS60 10 years ago for $400 I believe, got it in my first pile of 'junk'...went to ANACS (with the old, small white holders), got an MS60, sold it. Have wanted one every day since...finally find a nice example, and........dust in the wind.

To think, that scarce to rare (R4-5 I believe, and there are alot of them graded lower than MS, so condition rarity comes into play...especially with the PL designation) medal might have found it's way to the smelters.......brrrrrr.

But, at least, the insurance coverage made me whole. Small consolation........

By the way, if anyone see's this HK-19, I'd love to know it's whereabouts and trace it back to thief 'A':

I have mailed checks that large to the IRS, they clear mine in a hurry before i change my mind.

As far as your package, glad it got there but as said the postal service is pretty good about delivering. 10 years ago i would not have insured the package but now days i don't feel like losing 2.5 months worth of income over something would not take much effort to insure. I will admit that i never insure my ebay packages for the full amount, i usually just go 50 percent.

I the good old satellite days, I had friends that would on a weekly basis send up to 40k cash on express mail. I would never do such a thing, I think I would have a nervous break down...

I shipped about 350k fedex uninsured once (per the owner's wishes). I was a little nervious intil he confirmed the he got the box the next day.

I just sent three or four thousand dollars worth of Conders off to be imaged, I insured them for $200. Is that smart? I don't know, everyone has their own take on how to ship. I sometimes use overnight on a pricey (to me) piece. The regular dealers use registered mail which is probably the safest, but it is so damn slow. I guess I feel that the package doesn't get treated any different if it has five thousand dollars insurance or five hundred, and that the higher postage fee might be a red flag.
The price is always relative, one persons expensive is anothers chump change.
