Very charming examples! They look very lustrous image and very similar to the ones Mark Feld has on his site!

That top one is especially nice. Even though there isn't much room for contact marks, that particular example is extremely clean.

Very nice impression on the 1853. Many of these have lapped dies...some lose the bridge of the nose even. Nice specimens.

whats NOT to like?? (all I can think of are the dates....the first one would have been much sweeter as an 1850, and Id prefer the second as an 1863)image

    No, they didn't.

I just looked at the coin again, to be certain. Those are random shapes, resulting from differences in lighting, luster and color on the coin's surfaces. As I tilted it, I also saw patterns that closely resembled clouds, flowers and even a dog (or some other animal) with big ears.

The 1853 is gorgeous--I prefer the type 1 design.

If the coins were as big as the pictures I would like them better.

    A lovely pair regardless.

Both are nice, the 53 looks super clean.

Doesn't the gold dollar series boast some of the highest graded mid 19th century coins?
