a spin-off of Prethen's thread...

How many have you tried to prevent a fellow co-worker, family member, etc. from wasting their money on those flashy T.V. ads or magazines promising rare and collectible coins but yet they don't want to take your advice or still believe they are buying something valuable or rare?

Prethen's thread, or most notibly RickO's comment from that thread of: "This is a no-win situation. I have been in this situation, and believe me, they do NOT want to hear the truth. Twice I have been asked for, and given, my input on coins purchased from TV and schlock houses. Both times, even being extremely gentle and diplomatic, I was virtually cussed out, called a liar and, in fact, not spoken to again by these parties. It is just not worth it .... Cheers, RickO" brings me to making this thread.

Here is my story: The other day my dad insisted on wanting to buy a set of Presidential Dollars from companies such as Littleton Coin or those fancy TV ads - even though I told him repeatedly he would be paying over face value for non-collector quality coins. I told him he would be wasting his money and if he really wanted to buy a set I would look into it. Not much was said for a few weeks but next thing I know I notice an open package on the kitchen table from Littleton Coin Company with the following in it: A 1942 Mercury Dime (circulated), 1938-D Buffalo Nickel (circulated), a Sacajawea Dollar (uncirculated), and a P&D Set of 2003 Kennedy Halves (uncirculated). I didn't want to confront him about it but my mother had been sitting there and I told her he had about $5 in coins there so I hope he didn't pay much more than that. I could only hope this was maybe a little incentive package that came with a subscription to the magazine or something? I wouldn't know so if anyone else has an idea please let me know. But, he hasn't showed them to me or mentioned anything about it so I'm assuming my mother had passed on my opinion and he has quietly bit the bullet IMO. But now he is obsessing about obtaining a bank roll of any date Sacajawea Dollars. image

  • In my very limited experience with Littletons i found there are very few freebies as mentioned above.I could also be wrong but in my experience the "freebies" i got came with a 7 day return or pay up policy. The invoice will be around somewhere , they don't dish out incentives.

Ive edited to clear up what i mean by freebies , Littletons sent me several coins i didn't ask for along with my order. They were on approval even though i didn't ask for them. They gave me a limited time to return them or pay up and Yes , it was commen junk.

So you would either have to pay for them or return them correct?
  • Probably buried somewhere in the fine print of the paperwork of the order he placed was a permission/request for Littleton to send him approvals.

If he wants a roll of Sac dollars, go to the US Mint site. They are selling $250 boxes at face with free shipping...

It's likely that that was JUST the start, somewhere buried language likely says, by accepting our "gift", you agree to periodically
receive future shipments for evaluation, you can accept them , and pay, or just return them (or something like that). Those
future shipments become more and more overpriced, and more and more expensive and more and more frequent.

I suggest you put your foot down... and soon, show him the google pages of results for littleton coin complaints like this HERE!

  • I suggest you let him do what he wants to do. He is your father. You said your piece, he can make his own decisions.
