How safe would do you think ebay would be for...

Buying early date indian cents in problem free raw VG condition? I only ask cause of the number of counterfeits on the market. I am not looking for supergrade coins for the set I am making, but I dont want fakes either. I am sure tons exist for the keys, but what about other years?

Very safe for authenticity, except the 1877, IMO.

Certainly safer than MS coins. Just make sure there is a return privilege so
that if you don't like it, for whatever reason, just return. Not much risk that way.

Good luck shopping....oh and have you thought of a WTB on the BST? Some
of us would go through what we have for a fellow forum member.

I agree with RYK. The 1877 is hte only real candidate for caution. But look out for the recolorized stuff. It is rampant.

In addition to the 1877, be careful of added mintmarks on the 1908 and 1909 cents.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

  • For the most part, VERY. I'd be careful with the keys though (depending on the seller).

... and the 1909-S. Both dates have been faked in many ways and grades for decades.

It is still my opinion that the age of raw is over.

They may be real but frequently raw coins on eBay have problems such as an old cleaning with a subsequent recoloring so make sure the seller allows a return.

I would say fairly safe as long as the seller has good feedback. Personally I would rather buy them at a show because many sellers cant take proper photographs, and poor images may hide flaws.

  • I don't know if there have been any reports about albums full of fake Indian cents yet, but other series have been reported. An entire album full mostly of fakes, or sometimes just fake keys, sometimes an old real album, sometimes a fake album too. It is sad, but even relatively low cost coins are now suspect.

Even if they aren't being faked today, they likely will be soon. Even circulated Indian cents that might retail for $1 to $10, can generate healthy profits for a counterfeiter that can make them for 2 cents to 25 cents. Just in case, I'd learn what real ones look like and what at least a poorly made fake is likely to look like.

Ebay is not bad at all for the coins you seek. Be selective though and as said look at feedback and of course take your time to buy them. You would do much better though on the BST buy a set or group is a good way to get lower grade Indians 1880 to 1907 are very cheap still. Its a great set to put together. As already said really be careful on the keys I myself would not buy a Raw 77 unless I knew the person same with 09s.image
  • Much easier to just go to your local B&M or a small coin show. And you won't
    have to pay postage.
