ANA Not Hosting Interns This Year

I spent about a week completing my application and getting all of my published articles together, and before sending everything in, I emailed the ANA regarding the internship and to my great disapointment, was told they would not be hosting interns this year.

I was pretty excited about the possible opportunity, oh well.

Sorry about that... did they give you a reason why? Did they mention anything about Candy Stripers in lieu of interns? image

You talking about the YN Scholarship Application or something completely different?

If you've read posts over the past year, it's clear the ANA cares more about dealers and less about collectors under the current admin.

Sorry to hear your efforts went to waste.

  • The scholarship is part of a different entity.

I was applying for the Harry W. Bass, Jr. internship. Basically it was a research internship, something that I am passionate about.

IMHO many dealers are not happy about the way they have been treated the past few years... so it cuts both ways

And of course the posts here reflect reality 100%. image

ANA cares so little about collectors that they're going to add another class of Intro to Grading at Summer Seminars. And dealers think they've been abused so much that they will come teach it. This does not disprove your point, but, incomplete as this fact might be in any argument, you've given less evidence to support your point.

I did not get the impression that laxmaster regrets his efforts in the least.

Heck, intern under RWB - you'd get some amazing experience image

Perhaps this is a dumb question, but shouldn't that internship be funded by the Harry Bass Foundation or something like that?

I strongly suspect if someone stepped up to the plate, it would be taken care of.

The ANA had to cut a lot to get its house in order, and they have done so. We can certainly argue whether they are cutting the right areas, but they are doing what had to be done.

Well, I think this is from 2005 but over $55,000 went towards the internship from the Foundation.

laxmaster - Since the ANA internship isn't going to work this year, what are your next best options?

Well, nothing pertaining to the numismatic industry. Unfortunately, other than the ANA internship, there really aren't many viable options out there. Hopefully, I can apply for an internship in the financial industry, or something in the business field, or else I may be working at McDonaldsimageimage

There are other options in the numismatic hobby. Do you want to explore any?

Just being as optimistic as possible, I would turn in your material to the ANA for the Intern position anyway.
Sometimes these things have a way of working out at the last minute...especially with the right interest.
It really doesn't cost more than $5 to mail the stuff in, and it can't hurt to try!

    Just an idea.
  • I was thinking about doing that anyway. I put so much effort into into it anyway.

They're not hosting any this year for two reasons; the funds for the Bass Foundation supported position have not been approved for a further ten years and for insurance reasons for the ANA-supported position. They may all be back next year.
In the interim, I would suggest an internship at Heritage. You can apply on their website.

  • LostSisler, I'm not sure how you can suggest an internship at Heritage in lieu of one at the ANA...those are two totally different animals.
What do you mean security reasons? I'm a little curious...
