  I think the part you're seeing, coinkid855, is sure enough a chip off the old 9. I think the part he's referring to, though, is where the tail comes together with the body of the 9. I don't know whether that's just wear, or not. What condition-grade is that coin in? It might help us in the determination if we were to see the whole coin.
