Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free
carolj spoke those three words to me when I first joined here (except in PMs). She basically said "watch it buster". I've tried to be a good boy ever since . How am I doing ?

we could probably have a special forum with access for just members... for the record, I DONT have a PCGS membership. I dont submit for grading enough to justify the price. IF we had a single forum which was limited to members, chances are you could have a Memorial thread and not worry about it being hijacked by maladjusted knuckleheads. you could still have "open" type coin discussions where people could just "drop in" and ask... "what is this coin?", etc.
Providing a small haven might have a benefit, tho it might open up PCGS to more liability.

That's not a bad idea. I subscribe to a Steelers website which has a forum for paid subscribers, which contributions from the major sportswriters, and another forum for the freeloaders. The former forum has a higher level of discourse but is not as active. I generally read and post there. If there is breaking news, it hits the freebie forum first, and I know to go there. The two forums are complementary. That could also work here.

There are other forums that had trouble with trolls being banned and just re-registering under another name. They put software in place to automatically not allow them to re-register from that IP addy. Also no one can register without a valid email, by valid I mean other than these free email sites like gmail, yahoo etc. You have to use the email addy furnished by your isp. The software also had a provision for key words that were flagged and posts using them were not posted to the site at all. Any member could hit a button to report an objectionable post directly to the Mods. that would link the mod to the exact thread and post automatically. I'm sure there are a lot of other features as well. Hope that answers your question. I'm sure that there must be some IT guys here that can do a better job on the descriptions than I. >>
These measures can slow down the trolls, but there is no way to completely stop a determined troll. Ban an IP address? Even if the troll has a static IP, they simply use a proxy. Ban freemail addresses? There are hundreds that nobody has even heard about, (I own a freemail site myself). How about AOL users? Their IP address changes every time they connect. The best approach to the problem is self-policing combined with balanced moderation.
It is unlikely that the database from this forum could be ported over to modern forum software. Fusetalk is built on Cold Fusion and runs on a Windows platform. Most modern form software is MySQL and runs on a Unix platform.

Why couldn't you export the ColdFusion database to some comma delimited format and convert from that? Or write some custom software that reads the ColdFusion database and converts to some other modern database like MySql or Oracle?
BTW: when you say Unix, you mean Linux, right? Like Red Hat? >>
It could probably be ported over in some way by somebody who really knew what they were doing, but it isn't a simple matter of installing new forum software and then importing the database. Linux is a Unix derivative.
Russ, you are obviously a very well versed, intelligent, educated, respected, and I am sure many more adjectives I have ovelooked, member of this forum. This thread will not solve world hunger nor will it provide absolute solutions to an apparent ongoing problem with preventing alts. or bammed forum members. I am sure that Mr. Willis and the mods will monitor this forum along with the crew and make it the best that it can be however continuting to debate what technology can be implemented to reduce/restrict/possibly eliminate the risk of alts/trolls/troublemakers appears fruitless IMO and I have been in the IT industry for 26 years. I think that we can all agree that there is no 100% cure nor is there a technological solution avaiable to prevent access to those who are bent on raining on our numismatic parade. I do make my comments with all do respect and express my total agreement with Mr. Willis' orignal post comments.

Thank you Russ for explaining all that stuff in terms most of us could never understand! Horrible tragedy with this young fellow Cameron, situations like that bring out the worst and the best in people. Hopefully when emotions settle a bit things will return to normal.

Let's distinguish the difference in a troll and someone having an opinion and not afraid to say something controversial or maybe just to simply show what may be the other side of the coin. I fall into the latter admittedly, but have been called the dreaded T word...for just having an opinion although it may not be the "popular" side of the matter. If that makes me a troll, so be it, I can live with it. But I dont think it is cause to ban me, or anyone like me that just wants to make it known that there is always another side of the story.
I still feel this is something that would unjustifyably put new members that may have a differing opinion in the spotlight too. It's a knee jerk reaction that is really not needed imo. Not to mention being a form of censorship which I stongly oppose.
To forgive is to free a prisoner, and to discover that prisoner was you.
Thanks for all the comments. All we are asking is that each of you help keep this board a friendly and informative place.
