Top 10 Rarest MS 65 FBL Franklin Halfs

In 2001 , R.Tomaska wrote that the top ten were as follows :

"In order of rarity, the MS 65 FBL Franklins are: 1. 1953-S, 2. 1961-P, 3. 1962-P, 4. 1963-P, 5. 1952-S, 6. 1953-P, 7. 1961-D, 8. 1962-D, 9. 1951-S, and 10. 1949-D."

Let's see how those numbers have held up some 10 years later ,

1. 1953-S, 2. 1962-P, 3. 1963-P, 4. 1961-P, 5. 1952-S, 6. 1961-D, 7. 1962-D, 8. 1953-P, 9. 1960-D, and 10. 1951-S, ...........11. 1958-P

The mighty 1949-D is the lone date that fell out of the top ten ; which is ironic

because it is the most undervalued of all MS-65 Franklins at this time !

I think the 62-P in PCGS MS65 is more underrated than the 49-D.

Would it not be safe to say that at this time in life, Franklin's in 65 and up are not priced right?

What will it take to see the Franklin market jump not in mere 1-3 dollar increments, but in the 20-100 range?

Someday a monster roll of 53-S's will surface and the pops will rise like a blueberry muffin and the values will drop, same with a 93-S Morgan (strange commonality here).

Are FBL's in 65 or 66 that tough? Or can it be said that the TPG's do not want to take the chance of being overly gratuitous with grades?

I would love to nail a 53-S in a 4 FBL, wonder if there is one for sale out there...

I see more '62-Ps in MS65FBL, than '63-Ps, even though the pops would suggest differently, and most of the '63-Ps were not as appealing visually than the '62-Ps. I also see more '62-Ps than '61-Ps. And white '57-Ps and '58-Ps, very challenging in MS65FBL.

well , are we talking FBL coins ? The FBL thingy can muddle such discussion's .......

The King , the undisputed heavyweight champion , the Key ,

to the Franklin series in general - is the 1949-D .

Relative to the prices of the other dates in the series , it is the most vastly undervalued ........

not to say the '62 isn't a true bargain at the going rate of 100$ or less for a MS 65 - I'll give you that image

Mike, I was only talking FBLs. And the '49-D in MS65FBL (most are FBLs) has a very wide range of eye appeal from yuk (from the mint sets- they tended to not tone well) to the blast white.

Exactly, most 49-D MS65FBL's are just ugly, and that limits demand for them.

BTW, you young whippersnappers that aren't familiar with foodude because he doesn't post 'round here so much anymore, listen up:
he is a Franklin Force to be reckoned with!

No, I was not talking FBL's but just 65's

Oh, other than the cool toners, '53-S (because the FBLs of that date are so rare), and the '49-S, and '59-P PLs, I don't handle many non-FBLs.

Greg, I'll see you at CSNS in Chicago as I think you don't go to the South Shore Show anymore.

well , if you factor in eye appeal and solidly graded coins with great luster ; and coins that are very attractive , colored or white -

then that put's the 1949-D at the very top of the undervalued Franklin MS-65 FBL mountain .

Such coins should be valued in the 1500 to 2000 dollar range : at the very least !

Shane, you caught me at a weak moment. I tried buy that Frankie back in a Heritage auction but was out bid- I may have been the underbidder. The quarter is in my personal collection- I had Brandon take pics of it- it looks exactly like the pics. See you at FUN!

By saying Top 10 he might have well said the 30% (rounded). Does this Top 10 sound silly to anyone else?

The Top 10 Sports Cars Ever Produced - That is something since there have been a ton of sports cars produced over the past 80 years or so. That is a list to take note of if you are interested in that sort of thing.

But really....the top 10 MS65 FBL Franklins???? If I told my kids to pick the top 10 MS65 FBL Franklins out of the list of 34(I think this is correct)....guess what, they would get a lot of them right.

And then a few of you want to discuss the one that dropped out of the top 10 and another that should have made the list etc.
Anyone else agree with me? I like Franklins....I even have a set of them, but really?

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

No doubt about it... '58-P's are surprisingly difficult to come by with FBL...

Hey Shane, I ended up selling that reverse toned washie. But I regret not buying that set, for the dirt cheap price it sold for on ebay

Tomaska's numbers only give a rough idea, based on pop reports that we know damned well are skewed due to crackouts.
Then there is the glaring differances in standards.

62 is a tough date for true gems, with or without fbl. That was evident to me around 8 or 9 years ago.
It took me years to get what I consider a true shot 6 PCGS-65 non fbl.

I think you really would, PP. It's a very solid coin. I paid dearly for it.....it was the voices.......

Yes! I was able to basically ignore them for a few years, but they were always there. It keeps telling me to buy a nice 1960-D in P-65.
Seem like bargains right now. image
