UPDATED RESULTS: First ever after-market sale of all 2007, 2008 and 2009 ameros on ebay - some issue

orevilleoreville Posts: 11,798 ✭✭✭✭✭
Interesting results of all previously issued 2007, 2008 and 2009 Daniel Carr's ameros. I was not the seller.

2007 complete set (original cost $3716) sold for $8957 in various lots = 147% price appreciation over 3 years.

2008 complete set (original cost $5058) sold for $7428 in various lots = 47% price appreciation over 2 years.

2009 complete set (original cost $5033) sold for $7421 in various lots = 47% price appreciation in 1 year.

Comment: The 2008 ameros fared the worst of the three years because it had the largest quantities issued of the three years.

This was the first true auction anywhere in the aftermarket of a complete collection of all years of ameros that I recall.

Comments are requested.

Nice increases, but, for me at least, there are things that I won't buy no matter what, because of my belief (or non-belief) in them.
Most of Carr's items go into that bucket as I don't see the artistry that some claim, nor do I agree with the way he does these things.

So, I will remain a little poorer, but am ok with that.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

That does not have to be so. Silver, even junk silver, appreciated by about 70% in the past year.

Even your son's special birthday party slab has probably appreciated by over 50% in the last year alone! image

Heh! I think his slab stayed the same image
You are right about the silver, and I have made some college cash for him by selling some of the SAE rolls I had purchased. I hit the stage, when I had him, where I will do things for fun, but I will try to make it all better for him, therefore, I will remain, personally, a little poorer (at least until he gets through college image ).

    Here you go:

Link to completed ebay auctions of 2007, 2008 and 2009 ameros on 12/19/2010

By the way, the items with the biggest percentage appreciation were generally the most inexpensive ones originally sold by Daniel Carr.

It is 2 am and i am lazy, so i assume these 3 auctions contained silver and gold coins? If so what would the same amount in basic bullion have done over the 3 years purchased in 2007, 08 and 2009?

pennyannie: The copper issues actually appreciated the best whereas the bullion based issues appreciated less percentage-wise. In most cases, the percentage increase of gold bullion based issues seem to have increased more significantly than gold bullion itself whereas the silver issues increased less than silver bullion with some very NOTABLE exceptions.

Example is the 2007 year 100 Amero Pocahontas were issued at a cost of $55 in 2007 and sold for $386 and $400 today. That is an astounding increase!
Yet, they did not enjoy the largest percentage increase.

I believe NONE of the issues sold for less than their issue price but did not check that carefully.

Another interesting thing in my opinion is that there were so many lots crammed into a closing time that was less than 40 minutes apart which caused many lots to sell for less than would otherwise be expected.

This is the only time a complete collection of Ameros has been sold.
If the auctions were spread out more, and conducted at a different time of year, the results likely would have been higher.
But not a single coin sold for less than issue price. Some had impressive gains. Overall, not too shabby image

This one (not an amero, but from the same collection) also did well (original issue price was about $20):

To reply to a few pm's and messages asking for a better breakdown and comparison of price increases compared to bullion , here we go:

The first section is the results of the 2007 ameros sold. The first dollar amount is the original issue price in 2007 and the second figure is the auction price on December 19, 2010. Wow! Makes me wonder if I under-sold my non-Amero, extra Denver Mint medals. But it's all good -- I know they went to good homes to members here on the boards!

The Ft Collins medal prices are astounding, though. $117 for brass proof-likes! I was wondering what that medal might be worth nowadays. Mine cost $10 back in 2006.

Now just checking some more, and here's the first Ebay result I've ever seen for one of Daniel's Denver Mint medals, bought recently for $2 over 2006 list price! Bronze Denver Mint Medal by Carr, sold on Ebay

Indeed, 2008 was a wild year for commodity prices including gold. I used the final high prices that Daniel Carr had when he sold out of the various proofs and and satins as those are the figures still shown on his archived list. So this understates the percentage increase from 2008 to 2010 for some of the earlier gold ameros purchases as you correctly stated.

Also hope you are enjoying your Christmas!

    John,

    You missed these auctions:
    Brass Proof $51.99
    Silver Satin $231.50
    Silver Proof $231.50
    Brass Satin $131.50

I was the under-bidder in the auction you found but I already had both silver and brass varieties as well as three TAMS varieties. I only placed a low snipe in case no one noticed the listing. Apparently only two of us found it and so it went for a low price.

The auction included some early 2010 Ameros, but no Stonehenge tokens.
I mistakenly titled the four 2010 Amero auctions as "2009", but appended
a correction in the description. The four 2010 Ameros were the last auctions
    to end in the group.
