I think the '84 has less distracting marks so I'll go with that.

I like the "glow" on the 81-s, but not the field mark in front of her eye.

Im going to have to go with the CC on this one. They are a lot more lenient on CCs since they were in bags longer, and it looks way nicer than the 81-s which is more common.
BUT since its obvious the CC should of upgraded, im guessing it didnt since your posting a comparison?0 -

Boy, talk about a 50/50 guess. They look very similar. I'll guess the 84-cc. They sometimes are a little forgiving for the cc's, or at least that is many collector's belief.Listen. Trick question? The CC looks nicer in the pix so I'll guess the S upgraded. And like pakasmom said, I don't get it.
But we all know about images. Depending on lighting it's easy to highlight a scuff or hide it.

the coin is incredibly frosty which leads me to believe it has something to do with that rather than being dipped. If it wasnt cameo looking then i would believe it was dipped.0 -

The holder that the '81-S is in was last used in February, 2002 while the holder that the '84-CC is in immediately followed the holder that the '81-S is in and was last used in November, 2004. Therefore, there is the possibility that they were graded very close to one another with respect to date.

so did the 84 get upgraded from a 64 to a 65? It says on PCGS that the 84 is still a 650 -
I said the S mint hadn't been graded in 10 years, TomB said 8 years. Either way, it's the 84-CC that was regraded and got the bump.
Based on the photos, I also like the CC for both technical and depth/contrast. This really has nothing to do with the OPs specific question.

The answer is they BOTH got bumped to MS66DMPL after I sold them. I saw the 81-S on a famous crackout dealers website some months later as a 66DMPL and also listed as PQ for the grade, and saw the 84-CC listed in a major auction also graded MS66DMPL some months after I sold it.
The 84-CC didn't really surprise me that much, but I was shocked to see the 81-S in a 66DM holder with those 2 prominent cuts in the obv. field.0 -

Amazing! I suspect the 81-S will only get 66DMPL money if purchased blindly by a newby. All it takes to cause doubt and to damage a companies reputation is 10,000 properly graded coins and 1 improperly graded coin. I can't wait until there's an objective way to grade coins!
