    I believe that I first saw this coin nearly 45 years ago. It was owned by a local man who was a retired coin dealer, Abe Hepner.

    He used to bring his pair of half dollars, this and a 1796 out to tease dealers with at shows, and I am told even in his store, although I never knew him when he had the store. He ultimately sold the store to B. M. Douglas.

    He would put a price on them, crazy high, $25k, or more. I don't even remember. Maybe it was just 10k, but when you said OK, he would say he would think about it.

    He passed away and Lelan got to buy the pair from Mr. Hepner's daughter.
    PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
    I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

    The coin is the Norweb specimen. Sure would like to know where the Rogers specimen is though! The Rogers coin has not crossed the block since Numisma '95

    If I had to guess, I'd say the Rogers coin is in one of two places: Atlanta or Dallas.

    That Norweb coin is amazing!

    The Lelan Rogers half dollars (both 1796 and 1797, both graded by PCGS as MS66) are in the Pogue Collection. I got to see them at a Long Beach show last year; they were in a display frame with a few other nice halves: the FCC Boyd 1794 half graded PCGS MS64, a 1795 half graded PCGS MS65, and the sole mint state specimens of the 1795 3 leaves and 1795 small head halves. What a set! image

    I got to see this beauty and your 1794 dollar, just as thay got back from grading at the ANA this summer. Everyone should have a chance to view them in hand.

    So, how about next summer in Chicago, and bring the 1806 half and 1807 quarter to join them. Maybe even the 1827 half in Proof 66.

    Pogue may have more money, but he doesn't have these fabulous examples of early bust coinage.

    Julian is incorrect - This 1797 half is from the Norweb collection and then the Haig Koshkarian collection and then a New England investor

    before it passed to Bruce (Tradedollarnut)

    The other 1797 half resides in Dallas and is graded PCGS MS 66 and is the Leland Rogers coin correlating with Julians story . It use to be part of the Foxfire collection which resided in Indiana.

    The 1794 dollar that was also part of Leland Rogers holdings graded MS 66 and does reside in Atlanta.

    Tahoe Dale - The Pogues do have more money than Tradedollarnut but also do have the most Valuable and IMO The finest quality collection of early US

    coins in existence.
