    In what way do you think it is or could be bogus? It's either a genuine (but) tooled coin, a counterfeit coin or legitimate. From what I see in the images, I doubt that it's either of the first two possibilities, but can you show a picture of the entire coin?

    I think shelf doubling. Had a '16-s cent like that once. The flatness of the underlying date is a giveaway.

    I agree with machine dbl but the chips in all the letters look questionable to me, but I don't know enough about the series to authenticate it from the partial pictures.
    Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    An easy tell on FE and Indian Cents (and other coins as well) for strike doubling is when the doubling is on the date AND surrounding design elements.

    Prior to 1909 the date was punched into the die during a separate part of the die making process from when the design elements were added.

    So, doubling occurs on the date only for a repunched date and doubling occurs only on the other design elements (not on the date) for a doubled die.

    If it on both it is strike doubling, which was caused when the coin was struck.

    If it is in fact strike doubling, wouldn't you expect to also see it on the legend and eagle, and not just the date?

    Looks at the eagle's beak. There is some strike doubling there as well.

    It doesn't get much better than receiving opinions from both Tom D and Rick S on your coin.
    Almost like asking a question in history class about our country, and having a Supreme Court
    justice show up to give you the answer (or tell you where to find it).

    I agree -- definitely machine doubling. FE cents are notorious for this.

    Thanks for the replies. I'd always assumed (erroneously) that strike doubling would be more apparent across the entire coin rather than being unevenly distributed in certain areas. It just seems odd to me that the date would be so strongly doubled, yet the legend shows none, and there's no sign of any doubling on the reverse.

    The doubling happens when the coin is struck. The obverse (anvil, or lower die) was loose in the press. The die will shift slightly in some direction. In this case it must have rotated slightly too, so just the lower half of the design shifted. If the direction of the shift was north-south, you would have seen more doubling on the eagle's belly.

    Strike doubling is striking error, but not something that adds to the value of a coin. On high grade pieces, it takes away from the value.
