MS-58 Careful … old thread,

Broadstruck is amazing. He found this PCGS slabbed 1877-S 25c on ebay at 3am in August 2008, bought it right away. He then sold it to me on August 12, 2008.

Ok, it is not graded MS-59 as per a separate thread but an MS-58 is still pretty decent enough as a conversation piece for a mechanical error.

These things can happen (I have only seen it once before) and there is no shame in this kind of error. It is a lovely coin.

By the way, it did receive a green sticker.

    so I'm guessing the coin is actually AU58, right?

    It is accurately graded as a 58. It is technically not a mechanical error but a typo error of just the alpha characters AU vs MS. But it is way too cool!

    I showed this slab to John Dannreuther pf PCGS at the Boston ANA show, He studied it very carefully and remarked that this kind of mechanical error cannot occur anymore with the blue tags as the numeric grade controls the alpha characters. He then stated that when the older green labels/tags were in use, the alpha characters had to be manually reset when changing from MS to AU. This slab occurred when alpha character was not reset from a prior MS graded coin to this AU graded coin. The slab then somehow escaped the reviewer who normally would have caught this error.

    Even John thought it was a cool slab who then showed it to QDB who also liked it.

    oreville, I'm so glad you saved the image as I lost when I had a hard drive crash.

    I caught it just as it was listed via BIN and thought this is too cool and hit the button.

    I find it funny you had it CAC'd which now makes it even more of a conversation piece! image

    There was another coin graded ms-58 that was sold by CRO some years ago. There is a thread around here somewhere about it.
    I believe the backstory was the coin owner requested the ms58 grade rather than au58 on the holder per CRO being told that.

    That’s a first. It’s really close to mint state, So that was probably in his head when he typed MS instead of AU. Yes, it is accurately a 58. Cool Mechanical error.
