Does this eBayer not know how to do math or does he think I'm a sucker?

I wonder if it was the same coin?
anyway it is true that high volume dealers get big discounts...
<< <i>The seller is lying.

ill second that
eBay fees alone would be $42.27 in that case.
Interesting perspective.
<< <i>So you have no problem screwing eBay out of their fees and violating your agreement with them, but think you're being played for a sucker when the seller tries to make more money off you?
Interesting perspective. >>
I have no agreement with eBay that I will only buy through eBay, and I don't like people lying to me.

I'm sure eBay doesn't like people cutting them out of transactions either.
Furthermore, I believe you are incorrect as to your understanding of your agreement with eBay, specifically:
"While using eBay sites, services and tools, you will not:
...
circumvent or manipulate our fee structure, the billing process, or fees owed to eBay"
Source: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/user-agreement.html
So why is it OK for you to lie to eBay but not OK if this seller lies to you?

Not taking sides , but being a member ebay you agree to follow their rules, which state no making deals outside of ebay on lots listed

Ditto
Im a seller and a buyer and i'm pretty sure we are supposed to report messages (as sellers) pertaining to dealing outwith Ebay.
WTF is the difference? The coin is $800. If you want it, buy it. If not, pass and move on.

Agreed. Both the seller and potential buyer aren't playing by the rules...
<< <i>I do not see what the difference is why the seller insists that the price is $800. Perhaps he thought he should share in the upside of working outside ebay, since he was taking on additional risk for doing so. Perhaps he is assuming that you are still using a credit card. Perhaps he cannot do math. Perhaps he is lying. Perhaps he is getting a better rate for high volume. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps...

<< <i>Completely against eBay policy and if there was a way to report you for doing what you're suggesting, I certainly would. To message a seller and do a deal off eBay is a clear violation of their policy. I'm surprised we're even having this conversation to be quite frank.

So just to pose a hypo, as this is a dealers coin and it goes to reason that this coin is listed in his inventory or in his showcase, right. So now if he sells it to a walk in customer and then kills the auction has he not screwed ebay out of fees? How is that really any different? I think you should get on your moral high horse and report every dealer on ebay.

The dealer would be using eBay as free advertising if he ended the auction to another eBayer who happened to see the ad. Having someone walk into the dealer's store and buy the coin is completely different.

You're a good eBay searcher. I can confirm the seller in question was not David Lawrence, and I agree that David Lawrence is well respected and rightly so.

Do you own stock in eBay or work for them? I'm only asking because you are really getting hysterical over this issue.

No, I just don't like to see people taking advantage of things for their own gain and then complaining about how it didn't work to their "liking" right after. Trying to get their cake and eat it to.

So, now that you know that you were going to act in violation of Ebay policy, are you still OK doing that (while having a problem when you are lied to)?

I certainly agree the seller would be violating eBay policy; however, it's unclear to me that the buyer would be violating eBay policy. You can't breech a contract where no contract exists.
While using eBay sites, services and tools, you will not: circumvent or manipulate our fee structure, the billing process, or fees owed to eBay;
I guess if you do not have an eBay account then the above does not apply...if you do have an account then I think it does apply.
and if I never planned to buy the coin on eBay, then I am not breaking their rules since they were never going to get fees from me anyway
and as soon as I close my browser, I am no longer using ebay, and then just using the data stored in my head. I doubt they own that

The seller would have an active eBay listing while he was making the phone call; therefore, he would be using "eBay sites, services [or] tools." I'm not a fan of cheating; however, I'm not a fan of making needless donations to eBay or anybody else.
