Did you actually say you'd buy the camera, but are now backing out because you want to see what else might be available? That's not a good way to build buying-selling relationships.

All of which he can keep if he likes or I will buy back at a later time. He has also helped in other ways support wise.
If you plan on making a living on Ebay, you better be prepared for the scammers. There are plenty of them out there. It is just a cost of doing business.
NEVER sell anything you do not own or have in your possession.
No matter how you tell the story, if i was a buyer of yours i would be more that ticked off.
I have no doubt that you are a fine person and never planned or intended for something like this to happen, but i am sure plenty of guys in jail will tell you they are or were fine people.
Looks like you will be stuck owing paypal money. You can probably avoid paying them.

Yeah TexasNationals took the DBH. I took a big loss on that one. $500 bucks so anyone thinking I did this to garner sympathy and sell my stuff is a bit off. Maybe I read the OP first post wrong but on your ebay return from Paypal it says something like consignor backed out due to ebay return policy. I didn't know the guy consigned to you. I thought you wanted him to in a way and he threw you out. I could be wrong though. Also, we all have hard times these days. I'm surprised the forum police aren't calling your spam in this thread. NO, first he agreed to consign 1000$ face in halves and I started listing them. Then I changed the terms on him in a way by warning him that a return should be both our risk. He balked at that point and threw me out. I had already sold about half of the 1000$ at that point. little over. 600 I think i listed. I stopped when I started getting a vibe that i was making a huge mistake. Luckily I didnt list the full $1000
<< <i>So he basically wanted to sell to you and not consign? >>
He knew I couldnt afford to buy flat out. I wish i could have obviously. I didnt have anywhere near 10k. I told him my plan was to list them on ebay and pay him as the payments came in. He was OK with this. But when I got screwed on the ring returned(which by the way is looking like the lady is in the process of screwing me), that is when I mentioned to him that there was risk of a return or more in which the potential for being scammed existed(i couldnt field a scam on my own im broke)...that is when i scared him off. In retrospect I would have been in the hole for less money if i had just let it go that way but now I cant turn back time. I tried, it didnt work.

In sales we call it "painting seagulls in the picture."
Don't paint seagulls in the picture. Lesson learned.
Just finished reading the OP and skimming the replies here. Given the answers, you know what you did wrong by this time, or you should. A big screwup here was telling the old guy he needed to eat part of any returns. All was well with him up to that point. Of course, spending money that wasn't yet yours on stuff you couldn't yet afford was another biggie. All that aside...I do have a question.
First, once you bought some of the stuff outright and knew you didn't have enough to cover buying the rest of what the old guy had, why didn't you consider going to a local dealer, selling him what you had, telling him about the deal, and working out a profit split for funding the rest of the deal for you? Many dealers will do that. Sure- less profit for you, but it sure beats the heck out of what happened here. Then, you could have bought your new camera, etc. and had seed money for your Ebay venture.
Bottom line- you couldn't afford to play dealer/flipper here and you knew it- so you should have either tried to work a deal with someone who could bankroll you, or more simply, you should have just kept buying it in increments and left well enough alone. The lure of easy profit (translation-greed) combined with (no offense) a lack of common sense cost you everything here.
Side note about cameras-Frankly, you don't need a high end camera to take decent pics and sell succesfully on Ebay. We've been doing it since 1998- first camera was a beater Sony Mavica (the kind that took a 3 1/2" floppy disk! But, it shot sharp coin pics.), second was a 2 MP Nikon point and shoot with a macro feature...now we have a nicer model but the old one still shoots perfectly acceptable pics. My point being-As long as the camera has macro capability you can shoot good pics on a budget. You can buy a good point and shoot with a macro for under $100 in the 10 Megapixel range, which is still overkill for Ebay purposes.
Finally, I do sympathize with your circumstances and understand you were attempting to better your situation...but honestly if money's that tight, why aren't you trying to find employment outside your area of specialty? Some income is better than none. The tone of your posts suggests you won't settle for less than what you had (a 150K position)... correct me if I'm wrong here. There are undoubtedly jobs of some sort in your area- not necessarily exactly what you want perhaps, but still something that will keep food on the table. Like I said, some income is better than none, at least short term. Then you can rebuild your funds so you can do coin deals, ebay, etc. on the side while looking for the job you really want. JMHO.
Good Luck and kudos for at least being a stand up guy for attempting to rectify all this. It appears you are getting there.
My wife bought a playstation from a ebay seller that did not own any playstations. I think he relisted it 10 times. My wife and a few of the others banded together and thru multiple phone calls he got picked up and had a new address for a while. No sure how it finished out but my wife got the money back.
I would say that asking the seller to take some risk was a very dumb idea, i do not blame the guy. If you had a job making well over 100k a year you should have known better that try that with the old guy or even try to sell what you did not own. As telephoto said you had options and did not chose that route.
I quit selling items worth more than a few hndred bucks on ebay just because of the potenial problems. I sell items over $300 thru other venues. The fees charged by paypal and ebay now are just crazy for all the problems that can arise from there.
I did not see what the camera you are wanting to sell but i am in the market now for a new or better camera. I was looking at cannon Rebels ( not the 500 dollar one, the model up from there) or better, shoot me a pm.
I know the intend to rip was not there but every time i have been in court, the DA tries to paint you as a monster, i parked in a no park zone at home depot to unload and the prosecutor acted like prison time was warranted. LOL ( the fine employess at home depot told me to park where i did) BTW i did win.

A simple reply such as, "I'm sorry, as much as I would like to, I can only refund the amount which you paid." would have sufficed. If the buyer wanted to push it, then agree and refund him on a day when silver is lower than when the buyer purchased it.
