crazyhounddog - Technically your coin is AU. There is rub on the Buffalos left theigh and on the Indians cheek and above the eyebrow on the obverse.

There is also a break in the luster on these high points. I believe the grade you received is incorrect. It should be AU 62 which in todays grading world is MS 62. I am almost certain if you send the coin back in a few months it will upgrade to ms 62.

That 2nd photo of the 14d is much more telling. One can see the luster is muted on the high points, esp. on the buff's shoulder. But that's also where flatly struck areas don't tend to show much luster either, esp. under toning. Don't see anything I would call rub on this coin. The coin was heavily penalized for not having flashy luster and being somewhat deeply toned. This is the kind of coin NGC and PCGS would disagree on. I could see this going as high as 63 or 64 at NGC...and likely never lower than 62. But w/o confirming all this in hand, something else could be in play too.

I don't agree with the grade either. Often the same TPG doesn't agree with their own grade on additional submissions.

Thanks, CHD, for starting what has been an interesting thread. At least two people that know more than a little bit about coins have mentioned possible rub on the Indian's cheek. However, I tend to agree with Roadrunner on this one. I am guessing that the luster may be what is limiting the grade. Although the strike is not nearly as bad as some have mentioned, it is slightly flat in the central obverse.

I like the strike details you mentioned but would add looking for a hair detail coming diagonally up and left from the braid that is absent in this example. It is a strike detail that Bowers mentions in his book on Buffalos and I have always found it helpful.

So where is Cape and a few of the other Buffalo nuts like Garrow and CoolKarma? Maybe they didn't appreciate it is a Buffalo thread because of the title but I would like to hear their opinion.

Take the coin, send it to CAC and see if it stickers. Maybe JA will agree with your higher grade opinion...and it may go gold.

Personally, If I were grading that coin, holding it in my hand and rotating it under a lamp...with good eyes and NO loupe.....Id give it gold.

Actually Alan... I agree with the grade given ... I see high point rub and .. to me this coin looks AU 64. The strike carried the buff to the ms61 grade.
