I thought I would share some pics of a raw vintage box I assembled. The entire box is 1950s Topps cards. (1952 - 1959). The box has no duplicates and condition ranges from VG to NM. Several of the HOFers are PSA crackouts. It was a project I started a couple of years ago to get my nephew into vintage cards. I have had help from several board members through purchases and even donations. Nick (nam812) very generously gave me 17 of the 1952s in this box. Anyways...I thought you guys might enjoy some pics.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I need to add a Mantle to the box. Im thinking of the 1956. Maybe a PSA 3 and crack it out for the box. The 59 would be nice too. I'd also like to add a 55 Koufax rookie.

Very, very cool. I've been thinking seriously about starting a '59 or '60 Topps collection. Probably would be my biggest collecting challenge ever, but it would be rewarding to put together such a historic set.

What kind of box is that? It's the perfect storage size for the top loaders.

My version of "old school" was a Meijer (Midwest folks will understand) grocery bag full of loose cards that I would pretty much carry everywhere. How many late 70's cards I destroyed is anyone's guess.

The closest I am to set building with these would be the 1952 set (I have 25% of the set with just over 100 cards), the 1955 set (about 35% done) and the 1958 set (about 30% done). Maybe eventually I will work on completing a raw 55 set.

Piggs. Yeah..I like it too. I think its the OCD in me to display them like that. Several of these cards used to reside in PSA slabs. I wait til I get a bunch then email PSA to delete them from the database.

Fun stuff to look at! I bought a case of the RJ Roop boxes before they quit selling. I've got a lot of raw Pucketts in one and PSA cards in the other four.

Speaking of rubber bands and old school storage, I still have the cigar boxes I used as a kid:

Picked up a couple of Ashburns, a nice 55 Banks and some odds and ends last week. This week brought a couple of nice 57s (Frank Robinson rookie and a nice Mays). Sorry for the blurry scan. The 56s were some PSA 7s that I had left over from a set build attempt. I only have room for a dozen or so cards. Still need a Mantle, Koufax and Killebrew. After that I should have atleast 1 copy of every HOFer from that era in this box.

After looking at those pictures I had a feeling/thought that made me realize that this is what it is SUPPOSE to be like. Those cards looked great, couple may have been PSA 3's and some could have been PSA 9's, however all of the cards brought back the true reason to collect-- Memories and the love for the game. The grading stuff rubs my soul wrong. The shows of today rubs me wrong too now that I think about it. I am going to start collecting your way Downtown. Thanks for posting this.

Snowed in today. Thought I would bump my thread with a few cards. This box build has given me more satisfaction than any set I have ever put together.
I was trying to achieve a "rare find" feel to this box. The kind of thing that we always wish we could find in someones attic. (minus the Roop box and top-loaders)
Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do.

I love raw cards. I really have no interest in graded cards at all other than the worry about getting ripped off on big stars as I try to complete my '56 set.

After looking it over, it turns out I still need a few HOFers to have atleast 1 card of every HOFer who had a Topps card in the 50s.

Lee, It just so happens that each and every card in the box is a PSA 10 crack out. However, my camera does occasionally give the cards a VG to EX look to them. I must have the settings wrong for indoor pictures.

Well, the box is full so I guess that brings this project to an end. I really enjoyed doing this and it brings me alot of enjoyment when I flip through them. This box is packed with star power and HOFers. I havent been buying much as of late, and now that this is done...I probably will be taking a card buying break for a bit.
I hope you guys have enjoyed the pics. I think I may do some scans of individual cards for the "raw card Saturday" thread. Well here are a few cards that put the box at full. Happy Collecting everyone!

Great job finishing your box off. Raw is definitely the way to go!!!

The sets I collect are all raw in binders as I like to flip through them and enjoy the cards like when I was a kid. Thank god my allowance is a lot more now though...LOL.
