1928-p Peace dollar question

I am trying to complete a XF-AU Peace dollar collection and found a couple of them on flea-bay in PCGS slabs. The coins look like crap. I don't know if the sellers imaging is poor or something is fishy. I am inept at linking the auctions but the item # is 3206223876622 and 1206525459677. Also how do you verify if the number on the slab is not bogus? I read a previous thread that mentioned the font.image

You can go to the cert number lookup on the PCGS site to verify cert numbers. Unless there is a TruView pic associated with it, you will not know if that 1928 AU50 Peace dollar associated with the cert number is actually the one that was submitted and slabbed. A slab forger will always make sure that the cert number is in the database and that the coin is approximately correct in description.

Here's the PCGS cert look-up link.

I can't look up those auctions by number, for some reason. Why don't you just copy the link with <ctl>C and then click on the "http" button at the top of the reply "message text" and use <ctl>V. The next prompt is for the wording that should be used in your link (the way I displayed "Here's the PCGS cert look-up link" above). It's so simple you can't screw it up.

  • Buy a high end AU, the price is about the same and you will enjoy it more. Ha.com is a better place to look for that coin then ebay.

    PCGS AU55 Auction 320623876622

I could not find the other one.
  • That number shows in the data base using the link. The pictures on ebay are not all that bad. The coin does look like a dog. Big gash on the forehead.

Be picky when buying a 1928-P Peace dollar. They are a very overrated coin when it comes to "rarity." I know of a local retired dealer who at one point had about 200 of them put away.

Spend some time looking at the VAMWorld 1928P page and get familiar with the diagnostics for the real deal. There are not that many VAMs for 1928. Knowledge will save you from the scamsters.

  • Thanks for the link and the info. I had even considered a ANACS- AU cleaned or a raw one. I'll probably crack it out to go in the album anyway. The Vamworld suggestion makes sense to make sure at least I get a genuine coin.
