USPS mailing advice request

What is the most efficient, practical, and safest way to mail a coin valued in the $50 - $250 range? I'm used to using registered, which is obviously wildly inefficient for this value range.

Insured Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope or Small Flat Rate box.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I would go with Priority Mail insured.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Put it in a box and send it first class insured.

Mail it in a padded envelope first class insured.

If you do not have your own insurance then first class mail with insurance would seem to be a good choice unless you are also receiving a PayPal payment such as from ebay, which would necessitate Delivery Confirmation under $250 and Signature Confirmation from $250 or higher.

I use paypal shipping, first class with DC , costs a little more but worth the time saving and the feedback stars.

I'd have recommended that but them little boxes can get expensive whereas Priority Mail packaging is free.

Ditto. If it's under 13 ozs this is the way to go. Over 13 ounces then use a Priority Mail Flat Rate box.

Buy using PayPal Multi-Order shipping online. It saves you about 10% but does require a PayPal account, scale and printer.

I strongly recomend that small flat rate Box.
just re-enforce it with extra cardboard and pack in bubble rap and send it on its way

Yep....best $25 I ever spent for selling coins has been the postal scale. I just did the above last Friday...2 SAEs in a nice padded envelope, insured because I didn't feel like self-insuring this time, and used the registered mail paper tape to seal all the sides and also to put across the back (reason I did it across the back is because the 1 time I have had a coin missing when I received it was when a forum member had sent me 2 coins and I opened it to only find 1 (but the packaging for the other was still there). Seems that someone had slit the back, very nicely and carefully, and removed 1 coin and put the packaging back. This way, by taping the back, I make it less likely to happen)

...whatever method you choose, say a little prayer so it doesn't show up like this:

First class with tracking or first class with insurance.

No it isn't. The small flat rate box weighs 2.0oz. Let's say that with packaging and the coin the parcel now weighs 6oz (possibly high).

    First Class: $2.07 + $.19 for electronic DC = $2.36
    Priority: $4.95 + free electronic DC = $4.95

Even at Staples, where shipping supplies are grossly inflated in price, small boxes are well less than a buck each in a small bundle. Let's round up and say the box is $1. Now First Class is $3.36, which is still $1.59 less than Priority. No, the Priority supplies are NOT free.

If it's in the 48, I'd go with the above.

    Otherwise, priority mail.

rate comparisons can be looked at on the usps web site.

It makes little sense to spend $5 on priority mail when it doesn't arrive any faster than first class and weighs 8 ounces or less. Generally a single slab in a Safe T Mailer inside a bubble padded envelope can be sent for less than $2 sans tracking and insurance. If you buy USPS insurance, you get a tracking number with no need for DC or sig conf.

Probably the thing that insures a coin gets to where it supposed to is" Printing" the barcoded shipping label not hand writing it.
Wether it goes in a box or bubble pack mailer is secondary most lost shiptments are really miss directed because the label was miss read or was unreadable.
BTW 1st. Class with Delivery Confirmation VIA PayPal shipping bubble pack mailers have worked over 300 times this year for me in that price range.

If your cracked slab was in a Safe-T-Mailer AND a padded mailer, the USPS must have driven over it with the delivery truck!

And, because that can happen, I also like to add some bubble wrap and/or styrofoam peanuts to the packaging so it doesn't happen.

First class insured. I sent out coins worth $50K + via registered mail, no insurance and had no problems. Registered is signed for at every stop.

Having the packaged stamped fragile helps too. Anyone know how many complaints that TeleTrade gets?
