Have a follower at coin shows

I created this thread because every time I go to the Laughlin, Nevada show (which is coming up next week) theres a guy who always seems to want to check out what i'm doing at the table. it's kinda eerie and wasn't sure where i could get some advice on how to best handle this.

Stare him right in the eyes and say....."my god! you are super attractive!"
    That will teach him image
Else, I would just look at him a bit and say "yes, may I help you with something?", and repeat as often as necessary (and watch my back as I am leaving the show anyway)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

the fear is i think the guy is following me. it's the impression i get when i go to these shows and it makes me not even want to go anymore. can i inform the show promoter about this? it's like whenever i look at coins, he always happens to be right near me wanting to look at the same exact coins. very eerie!!image

im not entirely finding that answer amusing. this is a serious problem and it's been taking place quite more than a few times. it's at the point where i may not even attend the show anymore.

No offense intended. Just trying to keep it light.
Seriously, I would talk to security if he shows up again, just so they can keep an eye on him for you and
will be in the loop later if you need help.

<< <i>Could you give a few more details?

Is he there all day or just a time or two?
    It's happened twice so far.

    How long does he stay?

I've left the two times before. i don't know how long.

    Any conversation?
    no.
    Age?
    i'd guess mid 40's.
Does something seem off about him mentally or emotionally?
    not that i can tell.
Maybe you have a dealer buddy who could meet you a few miles before and follow you to the show and then be around during load in...if not at least ask the promoter if they could have a body shadowing you.
i don't know someone well enough who would do that, but maybe talking to the show promoter can help. does anyone here know who runs that show?

Maybe they could move your table towards the front or near a security guard station. When you spot him, have someone already willing to watch your table and then go to the promoter and have someone keep eyes on him.
    im not a dealer.

Ask him collector type questions...try and find out his motivations for being there.

Take the same precautions as above later on when you are departing. Is he looking to swipe them at the single moment you slip up? Maybe. Is he looking to rob you? It's hard to say but I'd be inclined to say no if he is just concentrated on the coins and not you, your other belongings or your actions before or after the show. Is he just maybe a bit mentally or emotionally off? Reasonable chance. Talk with other dealers beforehand and pass the word...maybe they notice something. >>

this is absolutely not a ruse, i created this name just recently because i figured someone here might have some ideas on what i should do.

Why worry about something like this, is he threatening you? Has this person said something that makes you feel like your life is in danger? I just don't get it? This is about some person that just shows up at a coin show and asks you what's up???????

Lots of stories to tell here...

I'll stick with this one for right now.

We were followed in Spain by someone with a very distinctive hat and scarf.

Near a couple of tourist spots, on the streets, then in a store. By the store, I knew we were being followed.

I turned the tables and began following him.

    That ended it.

Just ask him the next time you notice. Perhaps this is all coincidental?

Why the heck are folks so standoffish?

I think he is a plain-clothes security guard who works the show, and he has you figured to be a possible thief. I am not saying you are one, but this hypothesis would explain why he is always at the show and seemingly follows you. If that is the case, then do inform the show promoter, and you will find out for certain.

when you are at the show, do you have your 2 lovcely daughters with you?

I have never been to the show, how large is the crowd and number of tables?

do you always come at the same time and leave at the same time?
do you flash a large roll of $100 bills?

do you keep your coins at home? do you only look at the valuable stuff at the shows?

it is possible the guy is a thief, and wants to see if you spend enough to follow you home and plan a burglery

security should be more of an issue, especially as the economy gets worse and NV has onw of the highest unemployment rates

desparate times for many people just trying to stay alive, or feed their habits

watch out and be concerned - possibly make contacts from dealers to buy items after the show from their business rather than at the show

Don't be afraid and confront the guy head on. Tell him what you have noticed and ask him not to follow you. If he doesn't listen, ask security to talk with him. I would not put up with it after I noticed it to begin with.

In all seriousness, be careful. Just this past week a man was attacked and robbed in the elevator of Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City. A friend of mine who goes there regularly now uses valet parking and will only go into an elevator if there are others there.

Stick your pistol between his eyes and ask him WTF he wants!

Yeah, I think I'd snap a picture of him with my cell before he knew what I was doing, then ask him not to follow me.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I kinda like the direct approach, cuts down on time and waste. What's AU58 say, "You can run, but you'll only die tired." Too funny! An oldie, but a goodie.

I often wonder what the country would be like now had certain workers, in years gone by, turned the tables on union organizers and started a little baseball bat action of their own? You know, broken a few of upper management's kneecaps here and there. Not that it would've been the right thing to do, necessarily... image

    Hmmmm.

When I go to some of the local shows here near Sacramento, I've noticed that ................. everybody follows me! image

I pay my fee and enter the door. MacIntosh usually is set up right at the door and they always give out free Quarters or whatever the newest mint release is.

Folks follow me......................TO THAT SPECIFIC TABLE! image

I then head to the next table and make my way around the room.

    Folks are STILL FOLLOWING ME!!!!!

Sometimes, not always, but sometimes, I go up to a table and a fella will be there cherry picking through what I WAS GOING TO CHERRY PICK THROUGH so I sit back................

    Wait.....................

    Watch.....................

    Watch.....................

When he's through, I try my causal best to get up to the table as quickly as possible to see what he might have missed! All the while watching this fella to see where he MIGHT be headed next.

    So, maybe I follow people?

When I go to the Santa Clara Show (coming up here on the 19th which BTW is my birthday image ) I always start at one end of the room and make my way up one isle and down the next and I'll be danged if there aren't folks ...................... FOLLOWING ME!!!!!!!!

This year...............just to throw them off..............I'm gonna start on isle 100, look at a table 101 then head over to isle 700 to look at a table 701 then back to isle 100 and look at table 102 then back to 700 and look at table 702.

I'll bet NOBODY FOLLOWS ME THEN!

Well, my wife might follow me but thats ok because I know she'll throw her hands up in disbelief after the first 20 minutes so she won't be a real problem.

While we're at it, there's something else I've noticed lately....................................Everytime I go to the Sacramento Show.........................IT'S ALWAYS THE SAME DEALERS!!!!!!

Worse Yet.............these guys were at the Vallejo Show.................and the Dante Club Show................and the Fremont Show!

    AND

THEY ALWAYS HAVE THE SAME OLD COINS!

I think it's a big conspiracy to get me to buy their coins!

    What should I do?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
