How about some suggestions for a constructive YN program for our coin club....

Our club brought in a few hundred dollars during the Philadelphia show...from donations at the registration table (we manned it)....these funds are to be part of our YN program. BUT...the program is, and has been, a nebulous thought which has not yet congealed...and Im looking to do a presentation outlining some ideas about how we should proceed.

At our disposal....a possible gift from Whitman of who knows what....an "in" into a few local schools...and a few links to the local boy scouts organizations.

But...what the heck should we do...exactly? Have any other forum members here organized or participated in a decent YN club run project?

Im all ears........

Use lots and lots and lots and lots of givaways. It doesn't matter if it's little baggies of Lincoln Cents or foreign coins........ kids will pay attention if you're giving little things away.

You can also call up the Mint. They're very supportive of programs for young collectors and will give you a lot of freebies to disperse.

The kids at my local club like the annual bingo game and monthly raffle. So in that vein, I suggest some kind of games. I saw a coin shuffle board game, possible for younger kids. Coin oriented Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit kind of questions might work for older kids. True false kind of questions might be okay for any age group (eg: true or false: the U. S. made $3 bills, the U. S. made 3 cent coins, no living person has ever appeared on a U. S. coin...).

I believe you said you did Civil War reenactments. Period costumes might liven up any presentation, though of course these days, anything at a public school needs to be cleared and vetted well ahead of time.

Giveaways are a good idea, though people tend to value things more if they perceived that they earned it. Free stuff often gets tossed, or worse.

The local school program thing is a good idea. I know there was an article in the local paper about a coin club at one of the high schools in the county.

Ambro51 - try to contact a forum member Omega from U.S. & WORLD CURRENCY FORUM. He's been doing a great job for a few years now with his Young Notables Class. And with our little contributions his Classes are full of (numismatical) fun.

Here is the link to YN Classes posts:
    YN Class from Omega

(Search word "young" at u.s.&world currency forum - and you will find all posts for his YN classes)
If you read all his classes reports - you have the whole Curriculum for your classes.

    Best Regards,

    Rok

At some coin shows I've seen clubs give kids free whitman folders and allow them to sort through big piles of pennies or nickels to see how many holes they can fill up. Good opportunity to teach them about different dates, mintmark locations and mintages. Also gives them some free stuff to take home and it's cool because they are likely to keep up with it knowing that they can keep filling their album by searching the family pocket change.
