Washington Medal - what can you tell me about this?

Hello! Was at my local show this weekend and came across this medal - it is dated 1789 but looks way too new to be from 1789.

The relief is amazing which is why I purchased it - but can someone tell me more about it? It is uniface.

Thanks for any opinions.

Trial obverse strike of a modern medal?

Your uniface medal is a Bashlow restrike(circa 1961), perhaps of a 19th century die of Philadelphia diesinker Robert Lovett Jr. . Copper, about 22 mm. diameter. Struck without a collar. Listed as A654 in Rulau/Fuld "Medallic Portraits of Washington" 2nd ed. page 252.

Bashlow seems pretty prolific in the restrike business.

Nice relief and detail in the hair BTW.

Uh, actually it's about $10 retail.

I believe that particular portrait was used on a Civil War Patriotic token...
