Buchanan grades

I have one each submitted to PCGS and still awaiting grades. Anyway, I've seen post were folks are commenting on less than desirables coins and returning them to the mint. Yet when I review the sharded orders page it seems PCGS is being extremely generous with doling out 70s for both the MS and PR. If the MS is to be considered the key, as some have speculated, then it seems anything less than 70 wouldn't be worth holding on to. Once the pop reports level out, I'm sure the field will normalize. But for now it seems 70 is the bar.

well, in general, if it is not a 70 First Strike, then it may as well be raw.

I ordered 7 proofs -only two were nice enough to submit-only one got a 70.I'm sure not the only one prescreening their Buchanans, so the PCGS numbers probably look better than reality.

I'm prescreening mine and dumping the obvious problems right away. No need to waste $68 on grading for what I know will be a 68 or less.

  • I'm just your avg collector trying to complete the subset. Taking my chances with one each unopened submissions. With the previous thre submittals, was lucky enough to get 69s and one PR70 (jeff)

    Sent in 4 proofs, all came back 69, 5 Unc, had 4 70s and 1 68! (Well the 68 was a "+", anyway!)

  • I did it the easy ( or hard if you look at what I paid) way. Purchased two Uncs graded PCGS First Strike MS70 and one Proof graded PCGS First Strike PR70. All three for just over a $1,000 apiece. My first foray into the graded coin market; I believe I made a good choice. No way I could make a judgement on prescreening the winners. I do believe I could spot the obvious losers though.

<< <i>If the MS is to be considered the key, ................. >>

    Key?

It's way to early in the series to even mention that word as I firmly believe that MUCH lower mintages will occur.

As for MS/PR70's, those have ALWAYS been the ONLY slabbed versions that could ever command a premium. Anything else is just dreck which sells for far less than even the smallest of slabbing fees.
